DARK MATTER – Season 3 Episodes 11 & 12 – SPOILERS
Aliens from a nearly dead nearby universe who feed on entropy want to move into this one. Dwarf Star is building bodies for them, so they can infiltrate human society and take over the galaxy. The Android Liberation Front has included a message in the latest system upgrade urging androids everywhere to overthrow the anthroparchy and take over the galaxy, the very thing that Ferrous Corp. is trying to accomplish for itself by waging war with all the other corporations.
The aliens communicate who and what they are to Three (who was previously possessed by one of them), and Three‘s unconscious mind pictures the alien initially as Five, then as The Android, Two, and Six. Alien-Five tells him: “Your mind is too primitive to grasp what we are, too frightened of the truth, so it seeks the comfort of familiar images.” (Jodelle Ferland is really scarily great as alien-Five.) Saving the galaxy from corporate oppression is a full time job, so DARK MATTER’s band of fugitives has had little time for romantic entanglements. And somehow it seems that when two people get entangled on The Raza, one of the two often dies. For instance, Three‘s past-life girlfriend Sarah (Natalie Brown) was brought out of stasis for an episode and did not survive. One had a brief dalliance with Wendy the Pleasure Bot (Ruby Rose), then Wendy went rogue and was dismantled. (We don’t know what happened to her parts.) Here is a list of seven other relationships that have developed on The Raza, their (suggested) ship names, and what befell them.
Portia and Derrick (DERTIA) – One and Two had something going for a while. After One was identified by authorities to be Derrick Moss and not the fugitive Jace Corso, he was (for no identifiable reason) gunned down by Corso. Two was upset enough about the death of Moss that she hunted Corso down and personally killed him. (In the online role playing game World of Warcraft, Dertia is vengeance incarnate.)
Emily and Devon (DEVILY) – Five (aka Emily) began to have feelings for Devon Taltherd (Shaun Sipos), the doctor who helped the crew escape from prison on Hyperion-8. Before she could act on those feelings, Devon was stabbed and left for dead on Regulus-12 by one of Hansmeed‘s henchmen. Emily still doesn’t know what happened to him, and thinks he may have simply left without saying goodbye. We didn’t actually see Devon die, so he could still be alive.
Ryo and Nyx (FOURNYX) – Nyx Harper (Melanie Liburd) was poisoned by the jealous and ambitious Misaki (Ellen Wong) at the end of Season Two, putting an end to her relationship with Four. This was disappointing in many ways, but mainly because of the excellent ship name. (The fornix is a triangular area of white matter in the mammalian brain between the hippocampus and the hypothalamus. Damage to the fornix can cause difficulty in recalling long-term information such as details of past events, but it has little effect on the ability to recognize objects or familiar situations. That is very similar to the sort of memory loss The Raza‘s crew suffered in the first episode of the series.)
Portia and Marcus (PORCUS) – Two and Three had a one night stand before Two and One became a thing, but Three was put off when it was discovered that Two was not quite human (at least not in the usual sense) and the relationship did not continue, though before One‘s death, Three often seemed to be jealous of him and his relationship with Two. Portia and Marcus are definitely an item in the alternate universe. Three has almost died several times since, but on each occasion was rescued by Six. (Six (aka Kal Varrik, played by Roger Cross) is the only crew member who has had no romantic entanglements of any kind.)
The Android and Victor (ANTOR) – In Episode 2.4, Victor (Brendan Murray) gave The Android her upgrade chip and shortly thereafter her first kiss. Six episodes later, The Android came close to having dream sex with him during her charging cycle. (The cycle ended just as she and Victor were getting started.) The Android has flirted with Three on a couple of occasions, but given Three‘s reaction to Two‘s origins, a relationship seems unlikely. So far as we know, nothing bad has befallen Victor. This could be because he has never physically been on The Raza.
