Tommie-Amber Pirie (Ollie in “A Skinner, Darkly“) stars as Renee in Pat Mills’ thriller THE RETREAT. Renee and Valerie (Sarah Allen) plan to get married. They spend a weekend at a remote cabin to sort out some relationship difficulties, but soon after arriving discover that they are being hunted by a group of militant serial killers. Aaron Ashmore (John Jaqobis), Patrick Garrow (Turin), and Gavin Fox (Gared) are also in the cast. Alyson Richards, who wrote the screenplay, told Tim Dams of Variety: “As a queer woman, I was getting really frustrated that in so many genre films, the queer female characters are often revealed to be the psychotic killer or are killed. I really wanted to write a script where the gay characters didn’t turn on each other but instead turned to each other to survive.” THE RETREAT completed filming in Ontario last winter. No release date has been announced.

Dayle McLeod (Jenny in “Vessel“), whose book “The Big Dream: My Terrifyingly Beautiful Shamanic Initiation into the Arts” was published last March, has launched THE BIG DREAM PODCAST, a platform to tell stories that inspire social change. In the first episode (below), Dayle tells her own story of being the only mixed-race family in an all-white rural Canadian town in Northern Ontario, and explains how she internalized the racism around her and tried to bleach her skin to become white and, therefore, accepted. It wasn’t until an Ayahuasca ceremony went wrong and sent her to the psych ward that she realized she had been living a lie for twenty-five years. The experience connected her with her African ancestors and their ancestral shamanic spirituality which now inspires the work she does today. The first two episodes of the Podcast are now available on Spotify.
Anastasia Phillips (Calvert in “Cherchez la Bitch“) is Lisa Porter, the psychotic sister of Madison’s ex-lover, in OBSESSION: HER FINAL VENGEANCE, the final film in Lifetime’s Obsession Trilogy. All three films are written by Melissa Cassera (who also wrote HER STOLEN PAST) and star Celeste Desjardins as Madison, who, in the first film becomes romantically involved with the somewhat unstable Blake (Travis Nelson). Blake goes off the deep end in the second film, and we find out that he shares certain psychological traits with his sister Lisa (although we do not meet his sister until movie number three). In OBSESSION: HER FINAL VENGEANCE, Lisa is determined to punish Madison for what happened to her brother, so she joins Madison’s trauma support group and becomes her friend. The three Obsession films will air on Lifetime on three consecutive nights: 10, 11, and 12 July. (All three films will run consecutively starting at 4pm on Sunday 12 July.)
