Rukiya Bernard (Doc) will be Danielle in FREAKY FRIDAY, the third remake of the 1976 film which starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. This one is about Katherine (Heidi Blickenstaff) and Ellie (Cozi Zuehlsdorff), a mother and daughter who find themselves each in the other’s body after both express a wish to live the other’s life. (The magical device that does the switching is a pair of necklaces in the original film, fortune cookies in the 2003 adaptation, and an hourglass in this one.) This lastest incarnation of FREAKY FRIDAY is a musical (based on last year’s stage musical with music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey), and will premiere on the Disney Channel on 10 August. A trailer is available on YouTube.

Bernard is also Megan, Cara’s best friend, in ONE WINTER WEEKEND. Cara (Taylor Cole), who writes for a women’s magazine, is challenged by her editor to write about her decision to refrain from dating for a while after she is dumped on New Years Eve. (She calls it a “dating detox”.) Carla, looking for inspiration, books an impromptu ski weekend with Megan, but the two discover they’ve inadvertently double booked their chalet with two eligible men, Sean (Dweshane Williams) and Ben (Jack Turner). Then the four of them get snowed in. ONE WINTER WEEKEND will next air on The Hallmark Channel on Friday, 31 August at 4pm. Continue reading →
The gang is almost entirely reunited, but not with Vanessa, and not for long. Jolene (Carolyn Cave) and Doc (Rukiya Bernard) finally get back together, and Julius (Aleks Paunovic) is brought to Crooked Falls by a puzzled, scar-faced vampire who wants to know why this particular human won’t turn into a vampire when bitten. Young Callie turns up as well, having somehow acquired the ability to repair electronics.
Callie shows Jesse how to repair the radio, and this seems like a good thing, until she gives their co-ordinates to the first person she contacts. (The sound of a helicopter approaching at the end of the episode prompts Axel to exclaim “damned apocalypse!” Could this be the same helicopter that was used to kidnap Vanessa in episode 2.9? If so, it’s a good thing that Scarlett and The Boss have left on an excursion to prevent Dimitri from using the key to free The Elder. If Crooked Falls is captured, they won’t be. Continue reading →
Scab (Rowland Pidlubny) prepares food for Dimitri’s followers. Pidlubny’s Scab is the best Igor (villain’s assistant) in a long time.
Sheriff Walt Turner (Tom McBeath), a dark version of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT’s Buford T Justice, pulls Wanda the Ambulance over as the gang heads south searching for Vanessa (who was taken by a group that Axel assures us was not the military. “They had training, though”, he admits.) Sheriff Turner, an only slightly exaggerated embodiment of the American way, is extremely impressed with Axel and his military record and invites everybody for a barbecue. Overtly sexist and racist, Walt causes Doc (Rukiya Bernard) to tell him to “eat shit” at one point, and when Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) expresses a hatred for guns, Walt asserts that “bullets are life“.
