Xander (Ian Verdun) tries to call Nicole (who has asked him not to in a text). There are other characters who have been absent for quite a while. Janine is out of town; Levi is missing; & the entire Sheriff’s Department hasn’t been seen in quite a while.
Maddie and Ben approach Commander Kyle (Michael J Rogers) about using IVF technology to help Ryn conceive. Kyle, who offered to do that in a previous episode, is more than willing, and his mad scientist mindset is illustrated well in the following exchange:
KYLE:“Look at this point we should probably all put our cards on the table, don’t you think?” BEN:“Is this when you tell us about the cameras you hid in my house?” KYLE:“It’s my job to gather information about these creatures. How they behave. If they pose a threat.” MADDIE:“You crossed a line.” KYLE:“But sometimes that’s the cost of gaining knowledge. How’s Chris doing?”
A motel maid (Lyza Ulrych) gives Xander information about Nicole
Kyle claims that Chris (Chad Rook) is not a kidnapping victim, but is being treated by the Navy for the effects of mermaid song. It should be pointed out that Chris was originally kidnapped by Decker (Ron Yuan) under the same sort of pretext. After he escaped and decided to relocate to Alaska, the navy tracked him down again.
Meanwhie, Xander (Ian Verdun) is trying to track down Nicole (Natalee Linez). When he gets to the motel where she was staying, she has already left, but a maid tells Xander she saw Nicole arguing with a man in a military uniform (who might very well have been Kyle) just before she left. A letter from Grandma Pownall to Ruth’s mother convinces Ruth (Rena Owen) that the hybrids were not responsible for her mother’s death.
Commander Kyle (Michael J Rogers) has gone mad. He has his people digging up cemeteries, kidnapping ex-fishermen, and spying on civilians. Nicole (Natalee Linez), who has in the past disagreed with his approach to the investigation of mermaids, has disappeared, and Kyle may be responsible for that as well. (His predecessor, Decker, also went mad, but that was due to the effects of mermaid song. There is no indication that Kyle has been exposed to that.) Continue reading →
Commander Kyle (Michael J Rogers) offers IVF technology to help the merfolk repopulate.
Mermaids literally glow in mating season. Ryn tells Ben (Alex Roe) that no merfolk babies have been born for “many seasons”, and Ben says that all marine mammals have declining birthrates. Ryn, who plans to mate with Levi in the water and have a child, agrees to a physical examination by a Navy doctor to determine if she is fertile. We learn that Ryn has a bicornuate uterus. The doctor draws a parallel with whales and dolphins, but many land species have such a uterus, including horses, pigs, and a small percentage of humans. Ryn also has only one functioning ovary, as do some vivaparous varieties of sharks.
Calvin (Curtis Lum) begins looking for a job so he can pay off his gambling debts. He gets quickly frustrated with the process, and has this exchange with Xander:
CALVIN:“Why is this so hard? I just want minimal hours, maximum capital, and no one to answer to.” XANDER:“You should run for President. I hear there’s gonna be an opening.”Continue reading →
