VAN HELSING – Season 1 Episode 10 – SPOILERS
— Susan [when Theo is practicing with the quarterstaff]
Theo gives Vanessa a sword. Flesh leaves the group to minister to the flock of the late Micah (whom he killed). Sam reunites with Mohamad. And while Vanessa’s bite made the Doc human again, it did not make her want to be human.
Those bells the gang was following led them to an enclave of humans led by Micah, a guru-ish psychiatrist/minister whose wife Magdalene was turned vampire some while ago. Micah and Magda (Gwynyth Walsh) struck a deal that involved giving the vampire a regular supply of fresh blood and all the newborn babies she could eat. (Micah didn’t tell the others about that last part.)
Sam spots Mohamad’s Nirvana t-shirt on a clothes line. He goes looking for his friend and gets locked in a basement storage room by Xavier (William “Big Sleeps” Stewart). From the contents of the room, Sam figures out what’s going on. He breaks through a rather flimsy wall and finds Mohamad. Then, for no apparent reason, he kills Xavier. Sam definitely has blood lust issues.

Usually the funniest bits in VAN HELSING come from Susan (Hilary Jardine), but in this episode there is a scene where Micah is confronted by Theo about giving the babies to Magda. That’s not funny, but what happens in the background is. Flesh (Vincent Gale) had earlier been handed a knife with which he was supposed to kill Mohamad and Sam (who were captured after Xavier’s murder). Micah (Tom Cavanagh) reveals to the group something that Flesh told him in confidence (that Flesh had fantasized about killing his family before being turned vamp). So, while Micah continues to defend his actions to the group, Flesh is milling about behind him with the knife in his hand getting more and more pissed off as the scene progresses. One imagines he is trying to decide just where to stab the guy. He finally decides on the neck, and Micah is no more.
When the gang leaves the compound, Flesh decides to stay behind. He has changed clothes and looks quite a lot like Father Mulcahy from the TV version of M.A.S.H.
Doc (Rukiya Bernard) is tough to figure out. Before The Rising, she was anything but timid, standing up to the military and demanding information from her sister. Now she looks scared of everything. Last episode she confessed to Axel that she was no hero. (Axel forgave her.) This time she tells Vanessa that she closed the door on Axel and let him die. (Vanessa did not forgive her.) Then she goes to Magdalene and pleads with her to make her a vampire again. Her timidity is a puzzle, as is her need to be honest about it against her own best interests. Doc might have benefited from a session with Micah. She has scientific training. Why isn’t she analyzing her own behaviour?
Magda doesn’t like the taste of Doc, and her bite has no effect. Doc is still human. Magda tosses her aside and, in a bit of very confusing symbolism, Doc finds herself on the ground surrounded by the skeletons of babies. We do learn from this that a vampire cured by Vanessa’s bite cannot be turned vamp again. Nor do the bodily fluids of such a person cure a vampire. Those cured by Vanessa seem to possess a passive immunity. The sun is brightly visible through the trees during Magda’s encounter with Doc. The volcanic clouds are dispersing rapidly.
With Theo, Vanessa has sex for the first time since waking from her coma. She bites him in the process, and learns that nothing happens when she bites a human. Learning that may have been the main purpose of having sex with him. She tells Theo that the bite was unintentional, but it looked like she did it on purpose.
Sadly, Emma (Christie Burke) stays at the compound and does not join Vanessa and the others. Unless and until Doc rejoins them, the gang consists of two couples. Vanessa and Susan, and Sam and Mohamad.
