#5 — LIGHTS – Caitlin Cronenberg
This portrait of author/musician Lights was the most spectacular thing Cronenberg posted to Instagram this year. The picture was posted in June, and in July, Lights released the book SKIN&EARTH (with an accompanying 14 track album), the story of Enaia Jin, a girl “caught between romance and cults, gods and mortals, and just trying to find a good borscht”. Jin is led down a dark path that reveals a strange fantasy world and her own true nature.
Lights says that the album and the book are “…better absorbed separately and each of them augments the other. So you can listen to a song on its own and it’s something completely standalone. And then you can read the comic on its own and it’s standalone as well. But when you put them together and you start to connect the dots, there’s something so much deeper there.”
In September, Cronenberg and Jessica Ennis released THE ENDINGS: PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES OF LOVE, LOSS, AND BEGINNING AGAIN, a collection of photographic vignettes about women in times of emotional transformation. Cronenberg told Quill and Quire that the book’s photos have a cinematic quality. “It’s like you’re acting out a scene,” she said, “except you’re shooting stills instead of recording it.
