Tamsin Gets Over It

LOST GIRL – Season 5 Episode 11 – SPOILERS

STACEY: “You’d think a portal to Valhalla would be hard to miss,
but that’s what I said about genital warts.”

Linda Hamilton as Acacia in her teaching days Since her car is a 1955 Chevy, the scenes at The Valkyrie Academy most likely occurred in the mid-1950’s. Her car also appears to have a license plate from that era,

Evony (Emmanuelle Vaugier) is back, and dangerous as ever, though still human and quite vulnerable. With the help of Stacey (Kate Corbett) and Acacia (Linda Hamilton), Tamsin becomes aware of her own power, puts Acacia in charge of Valhalla when she could have had the position for herself, and goads Hades into showing his hand a bit. Once again, nobody tells Bo anything. Lauren and Tamsin tell her only what they absolutely must.

Tamsin now has the Brísingamen, which Trick calls the “necklace of seduction”. She took it before she sent Freyja and Stacey to monitor Tartarus. (Well, she sent Frejya there. Stacey tagged along without being told.) In Norse myth, Freyja is the goddess of love and fertility (among other things) and the necklace, which she always wore, has power similar to that of Aphrodite’s girdle. In Greek mythology, Hephaestus made a girdle of finely wrought gold for his wife Aphrodite. The magic he wove into it’s filigree work made her irresistible, and caused the breakup of their marriage, just as the acquisition of the Brisingamen caused the split between Odin and Freyja (for slightly different reasons).

With Frejya and Stacey in Tartarus, and Acacia in Valhalla, no one on earth knows that Tamsin has the necklace. Hephaestus turns up in next week’s episode, Judgement Fae, so it is possible that the necklace somehow becomes a problem.

Student Valkyrie Tamsin meets Acacia secretly at midnight. The eyes of the valkyrie are more stylishly darkened in this episode when she casts doubt.

Still upset at losing Bo, Tamsin has devised a plan to send Hades (Eric Roberts) back where he came from. She locates Stacey, who is unhappily working at a fast food joint, and all too pleased to join the mission. Acacia (Linda Hamilton) initially wants no part of Tamsin and Stacey’s adventure, but when the two head to the abandoned high school where they had been classmates, Acacia shows up to offer assistance. It turns out she was hiding Freyja there and wanted to keep them from finding out about that.

Tamsin and Stacey swear to keep Acacia's participation in their plan secret, using different hand signs.

Tamsin and Stacey find Freyja in a closet and force her to reveal her secrets. It seems that she was hiding because others wanted her to send Hades back to Hel, and she did not want it known that she didn’t have the power to do that. Her necklace had never worked on Hades. He went to Tartarus voluntarily so that he could build an army under cover of darkness.

Meanwhile, Evony’s test results are in, and she is very sick. So sick, in fact, that Lauren wonders aloud how she is still standing. Evony believes that her malady is the result of a curse that was placed on her while she was The Morrigan. The curse had no effect at the time, because she was so powerful, but once she became human, it took effect. Whether this is true or not (it seems like speculation on the part of Evony) it is bound to play on Lauren’s residual guilt about Nadia, her previous girlfriend who was cursed by The Ash into a five-year coma, and later killed by The Garuda.

In the best scene of the episode, Lauren and Bo are at the Dal discussing
Hades (Jack). Evony joins them at the bar.

LAUREN: [to Bo] “Speaking of Jack, how are you feeling?”
EVONY: “I love him. Finally someone was straight with me. I’m sick and I have to deal.”
BO: “Evony, I’m impressed.”
EVONY: “Well, luckily, I have the help of a very good doctor.”
LAUREN: (after long hesitation) “Oh, you mean me?”
EVONY: “God, I hate your false modesty. Yes, you, you moron.
Now buy me a drink. We got this, right?”

BO: “Yeah, I think we do.”
EVONY: (raises glass) “To Doctor Lewis. My friend. And the only hope I’ve got.”
LAUREN: “Evony, I swear to you, I will never give up on you.”
EVONY: “I know. I mean, you’re still chasing the succubus. Talk about futile.”

NOTES

Kate Corbett (Stacey) is Tammy in THE STEPS, which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 14 September. The film is about New York siblings who travel to Canada to visit their father and meet his new wife, only to hear their parents announce that they’re adopting a child. Directed by Andrew Currie, the film mocks peculiar obsessions and bad habits on both sides of the Canada/US border. Naomi Snieckus (the talent agent in LOST GIRL episode 1.9) also appears in the film as a social worker named Ellen.

The sci-fi thriller PRISONER X with Michelle Nolden as Carmen will be screened at the Calgary Film Festival 29 September at 9:30pm and 3 October at 11:15am. The film, about a prisoner the CIA believes to be a time-travelling terrorist, had its premiere at Cinefest Sudbury on 23 September.

The movie A SUNDAY HORSE, with Linda Hamilton as Mrs.Walden will be an Official Selection in the Equus Film Festival in New York City, 19-22 November. Inspired by a true story, the film focuses on a determined rider from the wrong side of the tracks recovering from a near fatal accident. She attempts a comeback at the National Jumping Championship, on a horse the experts thought was nothing special.

Sofia Troop (Kat, the fae with the forked, purple tongue in episode 5.5 of LOST GIRL) is Harper in the George D’Amato movie BLUR, which was filmed in Las Vegas. The story centers on Harper and Paul on a cross-country road trip in a purple Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible. Harper’s cell phone obsession blinds her to the vanishing intimacy in her relationship with Paul. The film’s tag line is: “Infidelity can hide in plain sight.” BLUR had its premiere at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto on 16 July.

TWO 4 ONE, Maureen Bradley‘s award winning 2014 dramedy co-starring Naomi Sneickus and Gavin Crawford, is now available on iTunes Canada. No indication yet when it will be available in the US. Sneickus (the talent agent in LOST GIRL episode 9, Fae Day) has small roles in two new films. She is Ellen in THE STEPS, which is about a New Yorker and his sister who visit their father to meet his new wife, only to hear the couple announce that they’re adopting a child to bring the family together. (Ellen is the social worker who interviews the family about the adoption.) Also in the cast of THE STEPS is Kate Corbett (Stacey the Valkyrie).

Ali Liebert in THE DEVOUT

Describing HAPPILY EVER AFTER (aka IF YOU SEE HER), another film due out soon directed by Joan Carr-Wiggin, Sneickus told Talent Monthly: “A gal from a small town goes home to look after her sick father. She meets up with her old best friend and is thrown into living like it’s high school all over again. I play one of the ex-high school friends and get to wear too much makeup and purple taffeta.”

THE ENDINGS by Caitlin Cronenberg
(from the New York Times 19 January)

Ali Liebert (Crystal) stars in THE DEVOUT, a film that tells the story of Darryl (Charlie Carrick) and his wife Jan (Liebert) who live in a religious, rural town. Their faith is tested when Darryl starts to believe that his dying daughter was an astronaut in a past life. The story is based on true events, and was filmed last winter in and around Victoria, British Columbia. It should be released later this year. Liebert described her character to Michael D. Reid of the Victoria Times-Colonist: “We go through overwhelming stages of grief and her husband has become unreliable,” she said. “His belief is putting stress on our relationship.”

Caitlin Cronenberg is getting ready to publish a new book of photographs, and Christine Horne (The Keeper) is in it. It’s called THE ENDINGS, and is a collection of short stories, each told through a series of still images with no text. Actresses were chosen as the subjects of the stories so that emotion would be conveyed as it would be in a film. Cronenberg told Hannah Yakobi of FAJO Magazine: “Our first session was a local Toronto actress, Christine Horne; she’s just phenomenal. She really set the bar high. I won’t list everybody, but we’ve done Sarah Gadon, who is my favourite person in the world, Nina Dobrev, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Charlotte Sullivan, Mena Suvari and Alison Pill.” Cronenberg’s previous book, POSER, can be purchased from her website for $55.

The second half of the fifth season of LOST GIRL will air on Showcase in Canada beginning
6 September at 9pm. It will air on SyFy (US) sometime in early 2016.

A New Valkyrie in Fae-town

LOST GIRL – Season 5 Episode 2 – SPOILERS

Lots of sparkage between Stacey the Valkyrie (Kate Corbett) and Dyson, who is now a lone wolf

Lots of sparkage between Stacey the Valkyrie (Kate Corbett) and Dyson, who is now a lone wolf. STACEY TO DYSON: “Holy Odin, your jawline is insanely distracting.”

STACEY: Valhalla’s books are still unbalanced.
TAMSIN: So are my boobs, but I make do.

Some speculation in the previous post was incorrect. Evony is no longer the Morrigan, despite the medical clinic bearing her name. And disappointingly, The Leviathan has not returned.

Bo takes the elevator to the Tartarus sub-basement, where she encounters Puca (Alex Appel), who takes a bite out of her leg. Then Persephone (Hannah Anderson) shows up and Bo heals herself with Persephone sex.

QUANTUM SEXUAL ENTANGLEMENT — Lauren, who is napping, has sex with an unidentified spirit at the same time that Bo is doing Persephone. Later in the episode, Lauren tells Bo that the ghost had some of Bo’s patented moves. This incident calls to mind the bit in Fae-ge Against the Machine where Trick and Stella share a kiss and Tamsin, far away in Brazenwood, is inspired to spontaneously kiss Bo at the same time.

Drawing (by Aife?) found by Bo behind some wallpaper in what used to be her nursery.

Drawing (by Aife?) found by Bo behind some wallpaper in what used to be her nursery.

Persephone is the wife of Hades and, as it turns out, Bo’s stepmother. So Vex was correct (early in Season 4) when he described The Pyrippus as a boogeyman made up to frighten children. Odin is The Wanderer, and Odin (the Norse version of Zeus) is the brother of Hades and married to Hera, Hades sister. His assistance may have been obtained in Hades’ quest for Bo. Anyway, Bo’s dad is Hades, which is kind of cool, because a 1998 article by Margaret Matthews, titled IS XENA’S FATHER A GOD? YES! IS IT ARES? NO!, developed a quite well thought out theory that Hades was Xena’s father. Bo offers to help Persephone escape from the underworld, but after it is explained that she can’t do that for another few millenia, Bo takes Persephone’s moon candle, and uses it to light the path home.

Persephone and Bo

Earlier in the story, Lauren and Dyson dig up Kenzi. They revive her at the clinic, and Dyson returns to the gates of Valhalla to prevent them from closing and trapping Bo inside. Lauren and Kenzi discover that they have been followed by a spirit which writes ‘help’ on a steamed up glass pane, making them think it is Bo. One wonders why, since it turns out not to be Bo, it writes ‘help’ on the glass.

Kenzi and Lauren trying to deal with a ghost is funny but the best part of this episode is Stacey (Kate Corbett), the Valkyrie bully from Tamsin’s school days. She and Dyson have chemistry. What does one call this ship? Dycey? Dyson is free now, because Tamsin and he have declared themselves to be nothing more than friends.

Stacey is upset when Tamsin insults her hair.

Kenzi is off to Spain to live a Fae-free life, because Hale left her some land.

Home alone, Bo removes boards from a living room window and lights the moon candle, causing a lawyer in an elevator somewhere to become a vehicle for a beast from hell. The lawyer, played by Amanda Walsh, when she’s holding that candle, looks more than a bit like Celesta from Xena: Warrior Princess.

When Kenzi tried to make the ghost she thought was Bo visible, she gave it physical form. Later, when it attacks Lauren at the Dal, Kenzi shoots it. The ghost seems to have been Japanese, setting up the next episode, “Big in Japan”.

Paolo Barzman, who directed LOST GIRL 5.1 and 5.2, also directs Episode 7 of M.A. Lovretta’s new series. KILLJOYS. The episode is titled Kiss Kiss, Bye Bye, and features Sarain Boylan (The Warden in Caged Fae) as Dr. Bliss and Sarah Power (Siobhan the Banshee in Fae Day) as the
recurring character Pawter. KILLJOYS is currently
filming, but as yet has no definite air date.

Amanda Walsh is Charlotte in the film MERCY, which was released in the US on 7 October, and is based on GRAMMA by Stephen King, a story written in 1984 and set in the Cthulhu mythos. MERCY can be streamed on Netflix (US).

Kate Corbett (Stacey) is Victoria and Lara Jean Chorostecki (Ianka the Opera Singer in Of All the Gin Joints) stars as Jacqui in the soon to be released film BARN WEDDING, about a couple who must reschedule their summer wedding to the dead of winter.
