Meredith (Kiomi Pyke), who is carrying Ryn’s baby and close to giving birth, is lowered by Dr. Leena (Kaaren de Zilva) into a cold water bath to bring her body temperature down. .
Ben (Alex Roe) seems to be afflicted with the same condition that destroyed Decker. (Aldon Decker was the guy who captured Ryn’s sister and experimented on her for the Navy. He became addicted to mermaid song and drowned in Episode 1.10.) With the best of intentions, Ben digs up a dead mermaid (just like Decker’s successor Kyle did), harvests her stem cells and injects himself with them. The idea is to prove to his father that continuing the treatment is safe for his mom (who has somehow developed greatly increased lung capacity, but still cannot walk). Decker and Kyle were both exploiting mermaids in an attempt to cure paralyzed former solders, and it’s a fair bet that Kyle also was exposed to the song. When Ryn finds out what Ben has done, she will not likely be pleased about it. Continue reading →
Ryn (Eline Powell) serves dinner. The problem with Ryn’s food seems more in the presentation than the content.
Doctor Leena (Kaaren de Zilva) is worried that the mermaid embryo implanted in Meredith (Kiomi Pyke) is not doing well. The child is growing in the womb much faster than expected. Since it is her child that Meredith is carrying, Ryn experiences sympathy pain (an interesting variation on Couvade syndrome).
Xander (Ian Verdun) gets an acceptance letter from the Washington State Crimminal Justice Academy, and worries about his physical condition which has apparently deteriorated since his days as a fisherman. If he manages to get into shape, he might be leaving town. Xander is still pining after Nicole (who spy-banged him last season) and asks Sheriff Bishop for help finding her. Continue reading →
Xander (Ian Verdun) tries to call Nicole (who has asked him not to in a text). There are other characters who have been absent for quite a while. Janine is out of town; Levi is missing; & the entire Sheriff’s Department hasn’t been seen in quite a while.
Maddie and Ben approach Commander Kyle (Michael J Rogers) about using IVF technology to help Ryn conceive. Kyle, who offered to do that in a previous episode, is more than willing, and his mad scientist mindset is illustrated well in the following exchange:
KYLE:“Look at this point we should probably all put our cards on the table, don’t you think?” BEN:“Is this when you tell us about the cameras you hid in my house?” KYLE:“It’s my job to gather information about these creatures. How they behave. If they pose a threat.” MADDIE:“You crossed a line.” KYLE:“But sometimes that’s the cost of gaining knowledge. How’s Chris doing?”
A motel maid (Lyza Ulrych) gives Xander information about Nicole
Kyle claims that Chris (Chad Rook) is not a kidnapping victim, but is being treated by the Navy for the effects of mermaid song. It should be pointed out that Chris was originally kidnapped by Decker (Ron Yuan) under the same sort of pretext. After he escaped and decided to relocate to Alaska, the navy tracked him down again.
Meanwhie, Xander (Ian Verdun) is trying to track down Nicole (Natalee Linez). When he gets to the motel where she was staying, she has already left, but a maid tells Xander she saw Nicole arguing with a man in a military uniform (who might very well have been Kyle) just before she left.
