Xander (Ian Verdun) tries to call Nicole (who has asked him not to in a text). There are other characters who have been absent for quite a while. Janine is out of town; Levi is missing; & the entire Sheriff’s Department hasn’t been seen in quite a while.
Maddie and Ben approach Commander Kyle (Michael J Rogers) about using IVF technology to help Ryn conceive. Kyle, who offered to do that in a previous episode, is more than willing, and his mad scientist mindset is illustrated well in the following exchange:
KYLE:“Look at this point we should probably all put our cards on the table, don’t you think?” BEN:“Is this when you tell us about the cameras you hid in my house?” KYLE:“It’s my job to gather information about these creatures. How they behave. If they pose a threat.” MADDIE:“You crossed a line.” KYLE:“But sometimes that’s the cost of gaining knowledge. How’s Chris doing?”
A motel maid (Lyza Ulrych) gives Xander information about Nicole
Kyle claims that Chris (Chad Rook) is not a kidnapping victim, but is being treated by the Navy for the effects of mermaid song. It should be pointed out that Chris was originally kidnapped by Decker (Ron Yuan) under the same sort of pretext. After he escaped and decided to relocate to Alaska, the navy tracked him down again.
Meanwhie, Xander (Ian Verdun) is trying to track down Nicole (Natalee Linez). When he gets to the motel where she was staying, she has already left, but a maid tells Xander she saw Nicole arguing with a man in a military uniform (who might very well have been Kyle) just before she left. Dr. Betty (Lauren Holly) takes notes at the scene of the crime.
Celeste (Kaaren de Zilva) offers Flynn some help with the case
On LOST GIRL (Season 3 Episode 10), Bo and Kenzi are investigating events at a camp for wayward youth, and have the following exchange:
BO:I need these kids to respect me. KENZI:Au contraire mon frère, you need them to trust me. And by taking down The Man [gestures to indicate Bo] I am like a folk hero to these delinks. I am like their Che Guevara! BO:Do you even know who that is? KENZI:Dude in the beret. Designs t-shirts for angry youth.
Then on MOTIVE, Angie Flynn discovers her son in a Che shirt and asks him the same question.
Manny (Cameron Bright) and the Che shirt.
MANNY:He’s famous ANGIE:For what? MANNY:I don’t know. For having his face on a shirt. ANGIE:Oh MANNY:Look, it’s a t-shirt, not a manifesto.
The husband and son of the killer (Adrian Hough and Seth Isaac Johnson)
That LOST GIRL episode, Delinquents, first aired on SHOWCASE in Canada on 24 March 2013. The MOTIVE episode, Out of the Past, first aired on CTV in Canada on 21 March 2013. Che t-shirts got referenced on prime time Canadian TV twice in the same week, and near as I can tell there is no connection at all between the two episodes. They were filmed in different cities, for different networks, with different writers and directors. Product placement? Jungian synchronicity?
Again there were no guns used on MOTIVE. The killer uses succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant, to temporarily paralyze her victim. Then she slits his throat.
The murder took place in a bookstore and during the investigation, Flynn notices Lucas (Brendan Penny) thumbing through a copy of Penthouse, and kids him about it. In the ensuing exchange we find out that Lucas has been married for only six months, and, though he does not say it directly, the implication is that he and his wife have not yet had sex. I assume this storyline will be developed further.
Brendan Penny and Vicki Pratt in THE VIRGINIAN
Detectives Vega and Flynn use Rock/Paper/Scissors to determine who gets to be the good cop. Angie tries unsuccessfully to cheat by inventing “dynamite” (a closed fist with extended thumb representing a fuse). Observation:Kristin Lehman has a very long thumb.
Lacey Chabert and Seth Isaac Johnson in THE COLOR OF RAIN
Brendan Penny will play Owen Walton in THE VIRGINIAN, which also stars Victoria Pratt (Cyane III in two episodes of XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS). The film seems to be based on the 1902 novel by Owen Wister. Production is currently underway.
Seth Isaac Johnson (Philip Harper) will be Drew Kell in the Hallmark Channel movie THE COLOR OF RAIN, a film about how two families came together to deal with tragedy, based on the 2012 book by Michael Spehn. It stars Lacey Chabert (who was briefly Bianca Montgomery on the soap ALL MY CHILDREN in 1992), and is scheduled for release on Father’s Day 2014.
Lauren Holly will be Mrs. Clinedinst, a visiting mother who ends up nursing wounded cadets at the Virginia Military Academy after the school is attacked by Union forces in the Civil War drama FIELD OF LOST SHOES, due out later this year. Also in the cast are Gale Harold (Brian Kinney in QUEER AS FOLK) and Mary Mouser (Dana Delany’s daughter in BODY OF PROOF). Filming was completed on 2 July.
