THE CRAZY ONES – Season 1 Episode 15 – SPOILERS
SIMON: “In advertising, a hack starts with the lie and then builds to the ad. A good ad man starts with the truth and then builds to the lie, so if you dig, somewhere deep down there’s still a kernel of truth.”
There is a scene, about halfway through this story, where Sidney sits her father Simon down to discover why he is having such a problem faking a funeral and eulogy for a rather obnoxious dead jingle-writer. Gellar was completely convincing in that scene, and that was the first time in this series when Gellar lost her own identity and became her character entirely.
Conrad the jingle-writer, whose after-death is the subject of this episode, might be an oblique reference to Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen), once the central character of TWO AND A HALF MEN. That show will, as of 27 February, precede THE CRAZY ONES instead of following it.
Missi Pyle guest stars as Melora, whose godfather Simon is, and whose quivering lower lip persuades him to deliver a grand production of a funeral. At a dramatic point in the funeral scene, a roll of Charmin is passed to her to dry her tears. She clearly did not expect it and nearly bursts out laughing.
SIMON: “I love the smell of Patton in the morning.”
Charmin toilet paper features strongly in this episode. It is kind of appropriate to have mid-life crisis of a Charmin Exec (Kurt Fuller) cause Simon to question his own legacy, if all he feels he is known for is an ability to sell “crap” to people. Nonetheless, both the show (and this blog) have given that company a free plug, and it becomes necessary to mention that, in 2009, Greenpeace advised environmentally conscious consumers that they should not use Charmin because it does not contain recycled paper and because it does use “Elemental chlorine-free bleaching” (ECF) which is not at all chlorine free and creates carcinogens. On the recycling issue, according to the National Resources Defence Council, if every household in the US replaced just one roll of virgin-fibre toilet paper (such as Charmin) with a roll of 100% recycled
toilet paper, it would save nearly half a million trees.
Missi Pyle (Melora) played a murderous bartender on RIZZOLI & ISLES (episode #6 I Kissed a Girl) and got to kiss Angie Harmon (on the neck). Plye is Maggie in the soon to be released 25 minute musical film DRAGULA, which stars Barry Bostwick in the title role. It’s about a high school senior who overcomes his emotional dysfunction and self-esteem issues when he unwittingly becomes involved with a drag queen who has a mysterious past.
Fred Melamed made his second appearance on the show as himself. He will star in the romcom THE DARK SIDE, which is set in New York City and interlaced with interviews with firefighters.
J.D. Walsh, (Randall) was Gordon the recurring pizza delivery guy (2004-2011) in 9 episodes of TWO AND A HALF MEN Randall also appeared in THE CRAZY ONES episode #3 Bad Dad.
THE CRAZY ONES will be pre-empted on 20 February because of coverage of the Olympic Games in Sochi. I am not watching the Olympics, and rather than state the reasons for that here, I refer you to Zoie Palmer’s statement (see tweet below) with which I agree completely.
I will not be watching the Olympics this year and I have explained why on my facebook fan page. Love to you all xox https://t.co/GYiVhn9Vxg
