THE EXPANSE – Season 1 Episodes 5 &6 – SPOILERS
Miller’s partner Dimitri (Jay Hernandez) is visited in hospital by Gia (Sarah Mitich). Miller’s hostility toward Gia is in stark contrast to how he relates to his quarry, Julie Mao
NAOMI: “It’s not the place, it’s the man.”
AMOS: “Fred Johnson. You know him?”
NAOMI: “I’ve known guys like him. Guys with causes. Causes that get people killed.”
Naomi: “I fix ships, not people.”
Naomi (Dominique Tipper) does not like causes. Detective Miller (Thomas Jane) has expressed similar sentiments about causes as he follows the trail of Julie Mao. Naomi and the Detective have most likely never met, but if they do meet, I’m betting they’re going to hit it off.
Everyone in THE EXPANSE is looking for someone, except maybe the UN which is not quite sure what it’s looking for. Miller is looking for Julie Mao. Fred Johnson (Chad L Coleman) is looking for the last survivor of the Scopuli (code-named Lionel Polanski). Naomi is chasing someone as well. Toward the end of episode six, she tells Johnson: “We’ll bring your Lionel Polanski home, if he’s out there. In return, I want you to help me find someone. Someday, I’ll come to you with a name. No questions asked.”
Octavia Muss (Athena Karkanis) stands behind a transparent display of Julie Mao.
One wonders if the same image is shown on both sides of the display.
The Martian ship Holden (Stephen Strait) and his crew are using is now officially called the Rocinante. Holden thought up the name, so one might assume he has not only read Don Quixote, but also identifies with its main character. The frigate had originally been named after a type of curved Japanese sword.
Chad L Coleman as the infamous Fred Johnson. He sends Holden on a mission to find the last survivor of the Scopuli
Detective Miller comes close to getting tossed out of an airlock in episode six, but Octavia Muss (Athena Karkanis) shoots his assailants and rescues him. Miller cynically assumes the worst of Gia when she visits his partner in hospital, but has a very protective and sympathetic attitude toward the target of his investigation, Julie Mao. When he tells his boss what he has discovered about Mao’s disappearance, he is summarily fired, so he is now free to leave Ceres Station. The paths of Holden and Miller should converge very soon.
The hamster seen earlier in the series has stopped working and appears to be robotic.
There is a quite strange and seemingly disconnected sequence in episode six involving a couple of asteroid miners being harassed by Martian cops. After they leave, the older guy gets all inspired by an OPA broadcast, shoves his buddy (nephew?) out an airlock (with spacesuit) and turns the netfull of asteroid bits he is towing into a giant slingshot which he uses to destroy the patrol ship, saying repeatedly: “A man’s gotta stand up.” Is this a David and Goliath metaphor? Could it be a reference to Peter Finch’s line: “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore” in NETWORK? William Holden was in NETWORK, and there is a Holden in THE EXPANSE. Also, putting a net around the asteroid they’re towing makes sense, but why not wait until they get where they’re going to blow it into chunks inside the net? Wouldn’t it be a more stable thing to tow if it was in one piece?
Naomi has a drink with Holden on Tycho Station. This picture offers a good view
of her neck tattoo.
Dominique Tipper (Naomi) will be Devani in THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS. The film is about a zombie apocalypse brought about by a fungus, but it’s not that simple. These zombies can reproduce, and their offspring are intelligent. The film is based on the 2014 novel of the same name by M. R. Carey (who also wrote the screenplay). It was shot mostly in Birmingham, England, and is due for release sometime in 2016.
The Expanse – Season 1 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 5 April. It can be pre-ordered now. Both 3-disc sets will include “exclusive bonus footage” and The Blu-ray version will also include UltraViolet digital copies of the episodes.
Wes Chatham (Amos) will be Daniel in Marc Forster‘s psychological drama, ALL I SEE IS YOU. The film follows a couple (Gina and James) living in Bangkok, Thailand. When Gina, who has been blind for most of her life, gets a corneal transplant, she she gains a new and quite different perspective on the relationship. The film will have its US release in the next few months.
Cas Anvar (Alex), who is Dr. Mittal in the Oscar-nominated film ROOM, will also be the apathetic, pleasure-seeking Captain Eric Cem in the webseries NOBILITY. The cast of the science fiction dramedy will also include Walter Koenig from STAR TREK, Tori Higginson from STARGATE, and Adrienne Wilkinson from XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS.
THE EXPANSE has been renewed by SyFy for a 13 episode 2nd season, which will air in early 2017.
