This portrait of author/musician Lights was the most spectacular thing Cronenberg posted to Instagram this year. The picture was posted in June, and in July, Lights released the book SKIN&EARTH (with an accompanying 14 track album), the story of Enaia Jin, a girl “caught between romance and cults, gods and mortals, and just trying to find a good borscht”. Jin is led down a dark path that reveals a strange fantasy world and her own true nature.
This Cronenberg selfie almost made the list as well.
Lights says that the album and the book are “…better absorbed separately and each of them augments the other. So you can listen to a song on its own and it’s something completely standalone. And then you can read the comic on its own and it’s standalone as well. But when you put them together and you start to connect the dots, there’s something so much deeper there.”
In September, Cronenberg and Jessica Ennis released THE ENDINGS: PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES OF LOVE, LOSS, AND BEGINNING AGAIN, a collection of photographic vignettes about women in times of emotional transformation. Cronenberg told Quill and Quire that the book’s photos have a cinematic quality. “It’s like you’re acting out a scene,” she said, “except you’re shooting stills instead of recording it. The photographs are not posed and sometimes they’re not in focus. It’s a very specific aesthetic.”Continue reading →
Kevin (Anna Silk) walks out of the abandoned uranium mine where Bulshar was once entombed, . She removes her protective gear and heads for the Earp homestead, somehow acquiring a Smart FourTwo Electric Drive Coupe along the way. (Smart vehicles are distributed and sold by Mercedes-Benz.) Kevin describes herself “a representative of a long line of Ambassadors tasked with looking after the balance in the world” She calls her bosses “The Menfolk”, and seems quite resentful of them. And she tells Wynonna and Charlie that Bulshar’s arm is still in the mine and it can be used to make a weapon that will kill the demon. (It turns out that Kevin is lying, and the quest for Bulshar’s arm is a device to find out if Waverly can control the power of her father’s ring.) Continue reading →
This was taken at the Four Seasons Hotel, Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. Of all the Cronenberg pictures to choose from in 2017, this seemed the most dramatic. She called it “That Ballroom Life” and added these hashtags: #setlife #la #losangeles #lax #mirror”.
Last year, Cronenberg did the cover for Drake’s album “Views“. More recently, she directed Hill‘s beautiful video for the song “On Camera”. Cronenberg discussed the process of making that video with Tanis Smither of EarMilk: “I think the way we did it was the coolest part. Basically I shot stills of Brenna doing all of her actions and dance moves, and then we printed those series of photos on paper, and Jon took photos of the pages being flipped and animated them. Then our amazing editor Kevin cut them to the beat. So there was actually no real video at all. Only stills of printed stills. I love it because all you see are the printed images, it is totally analog. All of the lighting effects you see were done in the original stills and then shown in the printouts. We even took advantage of the printer running out of ink to cause some cool effects.”. Continue reading →
