VAN HELSING – Season 3 Episode 4 – SPOILERS
Ivory (Jennifer Cheon) and Scab (Rowland Pidlubny) are still making their way back to The Sisterhood from the caves where the Van Helsing twins found The Elder. Weakened by hunger, they are rescued from predatory humans by some of Dr. Harrison’s modified vampires (called Daywalkers because they are unaffected by sunlight). These creatures show amazing ability to recover from injury. Ivory puts a steel rod through the brain of one of them, and a railway spike in the eye of another. Both recover from their injuries in a matter of minutes. The leader of the Daywalkers bites Ivory and transmits his healing power to her.
Ivory similarly transmits the power to Scab as the two of them lie on the railway tracks in front of the tank car under which they had been trapped. The tank car has a white poison placard (number 2312), and the interesting thing about that is that Kim Stanley Robinson wrote a novel titled 2312 about a city on Mercury called Terminator that was built on tracks so it could always remain in the planet’s habitable zone. In the novel, a meteorite, which turns out to be of artificial origin, destroys the tracks, cooking the city in the heat of the sun. The presence of this placard could be meant to suggest that the volcanic event that caused VAN HELSING’s vampire apocalypse was intentionally triggered. Continue reading →
