Tommie-Amber Pirie (Ollie in “A Skinner, Darkly“) stars as Renee in Pat Mills’ thriller THE RETREAT. Renee and Valerie (Sarah Allen) plan to get married. They spend a weekend at a remote cabin to sort out some relationship difficulties, but soon after arriving discover that they are being hunted by a group of militant serial killers. Aaron Ashmore (John Jaqobis), Patrick Garrow (Turin), and Gavin Fox (Gared) are also in the cast. Alyson Richards, who wrote the screenplay, told Tim Dams of Variety: “As a queer woman, I was getting really frustrated that in so many genre films, the queer female characters are often revealed to be the psychotic killer or are killed. I really wanted to write a script where the gay characters didn’t turn on each other but instead turned to each other to survive.” THE RETREAT completed filming in Ontario last winter. No release date has been announced. Continue reading →
KILLJOYS – Season 5 Episode 4 – SPOILERS
After contriving her own reawakening, Zeph wakes Turin (Patrick Garrow) and Pree (Thom Allison). Between the three of them, they locate a hidden nest of Black Root ships being used to seed the clouds of Westerley with mind-wipe chemicals, and blow up about a third of them in an attempt to slow down the terraforming process. This makes The Lady aware that the rebellion is bigger than Dutch and the Jaqobis brothers. (The hidden airfield is located at latitude 43.7 and longitude 79.13 on Westerley. On Earth, 43.7 North and 79.13 West is a spot very close to Toronto.)
Meanwhile, Dutch and the boys fail to escape from what turns out to be a prison ship. Their escape attempt impresses the Warden (played by Rachael Ancheril, who also plays twin witches on WYNONNA EARP). The Warden enlists their aid to stop an assassination, which they manage to do in short order, despite being outed as Killjoys to the prison population.
Would-be assassin Calvert (Anastasia Phillips) offering D’Avin advice on how to survive the prison psych ward is the best scene of the episode. (Phillips was also Vera Burr in the 2012 Global TV series BOMB GIRLS.) Continue reading →
Meg Tilly (Lorna Corbett) has written her second romance novel. CLIFF’S EDGE. The book follows Eve Harris as she prepares to house-sit for her neighbour and run her bakery in a quiet village on Solace Island, which is somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Her sister Maggie is away on her honeymoon. (Eve and her sister opened the bakery in Tilly’s first novel.) Her neighbour Luke, it turns out, has already offered the house to his friend, movie star Rhys Thomas, who needs a quiet place to be after completing his latest film. Eve and Rhys find themselves attracted to one another, but they aren’t as alone as they might think. CLIFF’S EDGE can be pre-ordered from most distributors, including Amazon and Google Play Books, and will be released on 21 May.
