Anna Devlin (Chorus in “The End“) will be Primrose Chattaway in several episodes of THE NEVERS, Joss Whedon’s science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women called The Touched. (It is not clear why the series isn’t called that as well. It may be that the group calls themselves “The Touched” and hostile outsiders call them “The Nevers”.) All of The Touched have unusual abilities. Their leader is Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), who is described as reckless, impulsive, and emotionally damaged. The only one whose powers have been defined so far is Annie Carbey (played by Rochelle Neil) who can control fire. Devlin’s character Primrose only wants to be an ordinary, proper teenage girl, but her height (she is ten feet tall) stands in the way of that. The women undertake to fight “relentless enemies” (presumably of Britain) and take on missions of global importance. Emmy Award winners Michelle Clapton (GAME OF THRONES) and Jane Petrie (THE CROWN), will design the costumes. The ten episode series began filming in London in July. HBO has not announced a release date. Continue reading →
Barbara Sukowa (Katerina Jones) stars as Nina in TWO OF US (Deux). Nina and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier), are two retired women who have secretly been in love with one another for decades. To everyone else (including Madeleine’s family) they are simply neighbours living on the top floor of their building. They come and go between their separate apartments, but are effectively living together. Then, one day, an unexpected event leads Madeleine’s daughter to deduce the truth about them, and Madeleine is snatched away from Nina. The landing that separates their apartments turns into a bottomless pit that they will try to bridge at any cost, just to be together again. TWO OF US is Italian filmmaker Filippo Meneghetti‘s first feature, and will have its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
Sukowa is also Philippa in the Wolfgang Groos comedy ENKEL FÜR ANFÄNGER (Grandson for Beginners), about two pensioners, Karin (Maren Kroymann) and Gerhard (Heiner Lauterbach), who have little to do since their children moved away, and are not in the mood for conventional seniors’ activities. They get some inspiration from Philippa, who is living as a “godfather granny”. Karin and Gerhard go on a quest to find godchild grandchildren of their own, and the not-so-young beginners must deal with hyperactive siblings, helicopter parents, and single moms with Tinder profiles. Written by Robert Lohr, ENKEL FÜR ANFÄNGER completed filming in North Rhine-Westphalia in June and will be released in Germany on 19 March. Continue reading →
– also Eve Harlow, Marci T House, Scott Cavalheiro
Marci T House (Laveau in LOST GIRL episode 4.11 “End of a Line”) will play a forensics officer in FIFTY SHADES DARKER (the sequel to FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) in which Anastasia confronts the anger and envy of Christian’s exes. The film was shot entirely in and around Vancouver, and will be released on 10 February 2017.
In Episode Two of the new SyFy series VAN HELSING, House will play a character called Major Stoker, and one might speculate that the Major is in some way related to the author of DRACULA (however Bram Stoker might fit into the VAN HELSING universe). And House will also be an “attending nurse” in next year’s PRISON BREAK: SEQUEL on FOX, which continues where the original PRISON BREAK series left off, except that some of the characters who died turn out not to have died after all.
Eve Harlow (Epona in the Lost Girl episode ORIGINS) will be Claire in the film WE’RE STILL TOGETHER, the story of Chris, who gets bullied a lot because of his obesity, and Bobby, who has self-destructive tendencies, and an adventuresome night in Montreal. Indiewire’s David Erlich said the film “…is shot with the same sensitive haze and seriocomic tone that defines so many recent indies, but it muscles its way above the masses on the strength of its unpredictability. In broad strokes, it’s true that you’ve seen these stories before: The isolated loner who learns how to respect himself, the stranger who’s way too cool not to have some of his own shit brewing beneath the surface. These are familiar types who follow familiar character arcs, but Klein’s movie pushes them along with the banal unpredictability of real life, and their stories feel bracingly human as a result.” WE’RE STILL TOGETHER premiered on 7 July at the 2016 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Harlow will also be Julia Swanbeck in episode 4.8 of RAY DONOVAN. The episode is titled “The Texan” and is scheduled to air on Showtime on 14 August at 9pm.
Eliana Jones (teen Tamsin) is Aspen Bishop in THE SWAP, a made for TV movie (based on the novel by Megan Shull) about Ellie, a rhythmic gymnast, who somehow switches bodies with her younger brother, who is a hockey player. THE SWAP is due to air on the Disney Channel sometime in the fall. Jones is also the recurring character Molly Kinney (daughter of the Chief of Plastic Surgery) on the medical drama SAVING HOPE, which recently was renewed by CTV for a fifth season. (SAVING HOPE airs in the US on ION Television.)
Scott Cavalheiro (Tad, the guy Tamsin picked up and shared with Bo in LOST GIRL episode 5.4) will be Daryl in at least five episodes of WHAT WOULD SAL DO, an eight episode modern day parable of an entitled underachiever who, for the first time in his life, is challenged to be a good person when he discovers he’s the Second Coming of Christ. Set in Sudbury, Ontario, WWSD also stars Jennifer Dale (Leviathan in LOST GIRL episode 4.9) as Sal’s mother, Maria. It will premiere on Superchannel in Canada sometime later this year.
