Camina Drummer (Cara Gee) reluctantly gives the command to fire on the Rocinante, much like when Will Riker (inset) was forced to fire on Locutus and the Borg in STTNG Episode 3.26 “Best of Both Worlds Part I”
Miller, or something that looks like Miller, has been appearing to Holden (though it is not visible to cameras, or to other people). Holden runs multiple brain scans and tests himself for protomolecule contamination, all with negative results. Then he notices that Miller’s appearance happened at exactly the same time that Manéo Jung-Espinoza crashed into the ring, and he accepts that Miller is, at least in some sense, real. Let’s look at four bits of conversation between Miller and Holden, and see if we can figure out some stuff.
MILLER:“It’s those damn doors and corners. I mean, that’s where they get you. You don’t walk into the middle of a crime scene without knowing there’s not somebody there to put you down. It’s the thing you don’t see coming. That’s what it is.” HOLDEN:“What’s with the hat?” MILLER:“Keeps the rain off my head.”Continue reading →
Ryn and Ben discuss the sometimes deleterious effects of siren song
Helen (Rena Owen) is the last surviving descendant of Charles Pownall and his significant mermaid. Helen explains this shortly before Donna is laid to rest in a well-hidden graveyard, alongside the rest of the aquatic side of the Pownall family. Helen says that she is one-eighth mermaid, and that would make her Charles’ great-granddaughter, so Pownall’s daughter and at least one of his grandchildren must be buried in that cemetery with Donna. There are four tombstones visible when we first see the place, so either there were siblings who did not reproduce, or some humans (possibly husbands or wives) are buried in that place as well. Six months have passed since the last episode, and there have been a few changes. Prax (Terry Chen) has gone to Ganymede with his daughter Mei to help rebuild the station there. Naomi (Dominique Tipper) has taken a leave of absence from the Rocinante and is now Chief Engineer on the Behemoth (formerly the Nauvoo) under the command of Camina Drummer (Cara Gee). Avasarala has become UN Secretary-General, following the resignation of Sorrento-Gillis. That jellyfish thing that the protomolecule built on Venus (Volovodov thought it looked like a squid) has traveled to a spot outside the orbit of Uranus and constructed a ring shaped thing that shows no signs of activity and emits “no radiation or signals of any kind”. Curious Martians and Earthers hover in the vicinity of the ring, trying to figure out what it might be. Continue reading →
