In Moscow recently to introduce AUGUSTINE at the 2 in 1 International Film Festival there, Soko and her brother Max stopped by the Church of Christ the Savior out of respect for the members of the band Pussy Riot, who were recently sentenced to two years in a Russian labour camp.
UPDATE – 2 FEBRUARY 2013 – MUSIC BOX FILMS has acquired all rights to AUGUSTINE. It will be in US theatres sometime in March.
The fact that the trailer for Soko‘s new film AUGUSTINE, which is due to be released in France on 7 November, has English subtitles encourages optimism about the possiblity of a US release, perhaps on VOD. (Her two most recent cinematic efforts, BYE BYE BLONDIE, AND IN THE BEGINNING, despite excellent reviews, have yet to be released in North America.)
AUGUSTINE portrays the relationship between Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot, the founder of modern neurology, and one of his patients, Augustine (played by Soko) a housemaid suffering from “hysteria”.
Directed by Alice Winocour, the film also stars Chiara Mastroianni (daughter of Marcello and Catherine Deneuve) and Vincent Lindon.
THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER had this to say about Soko’s performance: “Soko…compellingly underplays an individual awkwardly caught between girlhood and womanhood by her physical traumas. She certainly confirms the promise that saw her nominated as ‘Best Female Hope’ at the 2006 Césars (for Xavier Giannoli’s In the Beginning), holding her own against the avuncular, ever-observant slyness of the vastly more experienced Lindon, himself a four-time César nominee.”
There will be an advance screening of AUGUSTINE at UGC Les Halles in Paris on 5 November at 8pm. Alice Winocour and Phillipe Lioret will be there. (Lioret directed Vincent Lindon in the 2011 film ALL OUR DESIRES.)
Soko, whose first album, I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN, was released earlier this year, will open for AZURE RAY for 10 dates beginning 4 September at the Bottletree Café in the dream pop duo’s home town, Birmingham, Alabama, and ending 22 September at The Irenic in San Diego, CA.
AZURE RAY is made up of Maria Taylor, who in addition to her work with AZURE RAY, has released 5 solo albums, the last of which was OVERLOOK in 2011, and who always removes the high E string from her guitar; and Orenda Fink, whose last solo album was ASK THE NIGHT in 2009.
Soko’s latest film, AUGUSTINE, will be released in French theatres on 7 November. She is currently working on an as yet untitled second album.
