MOTIVE – Season 1 Episode 11 – SPOILERS
Adrian Holmes plays Mark ‘Machine’ Mason, an incorruptible, retired Ali-esque boxer who runs a boxing gym with his brother Joey (Jarod Joseph). Joey is very corruptible and continually frustrated by brother Mark in his attempts to make money. An accident at the gym at some time in the past left Joey paralyzed from the waist down. He is clever enough to overcome his handicap, improvise a murder weapon from a weight and a wheelchair, and kill his brother.
The episode brought to mind a Bogart film from 1956, THE HARDER THEY FALL (conveniently available in its entirety on YouTube), which is probably the best film ever made about corruption in the sport. ‘Bam Bam’ Perez (George Tchortov) is a so-so fighter that Joey is trying to sell as a title contender. His brother goes along with it until Bam Bam makes eyes at his wife Beth (Mayko Nguyen) at which point he gets Bam Bam in the ring and gives the alleged contender an educational thumping, the same sort of education that George (Jersey Joe Walcott) gave Toro Moreno (Mike Lane) in that Bogart flick.
A hint of feminism is injected when Bam Bam is interviewed by Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman). Asked about the victim, Bam Bam says “What kind of man lets his wife pay his bills?” Angie answers: “One who knows that marriage is a partnership?” Tchortov’s character is easily the most enjoyable of the episode, and Bam Bam is the first to make a pass at Angie Flynn in the series. Flynn makes a point (perhaps too much of one) of throwing away his phone number.
There is cute moment when Vega (Louis Ferreira) takes off the toque he is wearing and Angie informs him (after appropriate hesitation) that he really must fix his hair.
Mayko Nguyen‘s first film appearance was as Jill in National Lampoon’s GOING THE DISTANCE (2004).
Jarod Joseph (the killer) plays cross-dressing techie Ellis in the 2013 horror comedy HELL IN A HANDBAG, which describes itself as the chronicles of “the adventures of Father Michael, an embittered gun-toting exorcist priest and his partner, the leather-clad Sister Joan”. He is also Billy (the mouse who became a mechanic) in ONCE UPON A TIME.
Style Dayne (Tyler ‘Push-ups’ Switzer) will make his first feature film appearance as Friedman in the 2013 movie WORDS AND PICTURES. Also in the cast of that will be Janet Kidder, who was the girlfriend of the killer in episode 6 of MOTIVE.
