Shamier Anderson (Xavier Dolls) will be Reggie in SON OF THE SOUTH, the true story of one young white southerner in the summer of 1961, based on the autobiography of Bob Zellner (who is played by Lucas Till in the film). Zellner is an Alabama native and grandson of a Ku Klux Klan member who became the first white field secretary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Anderson’s character is likely Reggie Robinson, who was also a field secretary of SNCC. Robinson and Zellner were both in McComb, Mississippi in 1961 during the voter registration drives. SON OF THE SOUTH was written and directed by Barry Alexander Brown, who described the film to Clara McVey of The Hollywood Reporter: “There’s lots of big stories, but I found it a very inspiring story. I’m from Alabama and I wanted to do something set in the South that I grew up in, and what really feels like the South. There’s going to be a lot of humor in the film, much like BlacKkKlansman. Very dramatic story, but a lot of humor at the same time.” SON OF THE SOUTH is expected to be released later this year. Continue reading →
Anna Hardwick (Maddy in “Faes Wide Shut“) is Noreen in Episode 4 of of the nine-episode miniseries MRS. AMERICA, which tells the true story of the efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and the unexpected backlash let by Phyllis Schlafly (Cate Blanchett). The series shows the culture wars of the 70s from the perspectives of Schlafly and feminists Steinem, Friedan, Chisolm, Abzug, and Ruckelshaus. On Instagram, Hardwick said: “I will treasure improvising with my comedy hero, the gracious Tracey Ullman as the terrifying Betty Friedan, for the rest of my days.” That makes it at least possible that Hardwick’s character is Noreen Connell, who worked with Friedan on the White House Conference on Families in 1980. Samantha Espie (Pietra in “Let the Dark Times Roll“) appears in the series as Jacqui Davidson (although the last name is spelled without a ‘d’ on the show’s IMDB page), the president and founder of the anti-ERA organization HOW (Happiness of Womanhood). Angela Besharah (Jobina in “Caged Fae“) is also in the cast. Created by Dahvi Waller, MRS AMERICA’s first three episodes will be on HULU on 15 April, with a new episode released each subsequent Wednesday. YouTube has a trailer. Continue reading →
Dayle McLeod (Jenny in “Vessel”) has written her first book, a memoir titled: “THE BIG DREAM: My Terrifyingly Beautiful Shamanic Initiation into the Arts”. After drinking the hallucinogen ayahuasca in Ojai, California on the winter solstice of 2014, McLeod found herself trapped in a dream realm. For forty days, she lived in a land of epic visions where she was initiated into the Illuminati and sent on a doomsday mission to collect the seven chakra jewels of the Earth. She was guided back to normalcy by a Native American Jungian psychologist, and that journey is what the book is mostly about. THE BIG DREAM is available in Paperback and Kindle formats.
McLeod appears briefly as Nathan’s friend Shyliegh in Episode 4.12 of KIM’S CONVENIENCE (titled “Knife Strife”) in which Umma (Jean Yoon) learns about a recent unsolved crime in the neighbourhood and believes she knows something about it, but doesn’t want to say how she knows, and Shannon (Nicole Power) hosts the Branch Managers Annual General Meeting. Season 4 of KIM’S CONVENIENCE can be streamed on CBC Gem in Canada, and on Netflix in the US. Continue reading →
