THE CRAZY ONES – Season 1 Episode 11 – SPOILERS
This episode is about addiction and stereotypes. Simon (Robin Williams) is a recovering addict. While he and the gang are working up an ad campaign for non-alcoholic wine, he describes his own addictions, saying that he switched at one point from Coke to New Coke, but he just called it that and it was really crystal meth. After a while he went back to ‘Classic Coke’ and enjoyed it all the more.
Kelsi the intern (Ashley Tisdale) has been hired because her dad makes cold cuts and has a 30 million dollar account with the agency. Kelsi is the brat to end all brats, and makes the mistake of suggesting that Sydney is, like herself, a layabout who got her job through nepotism. Sydney yells at the intern a bit, and Kelsi flees. The gang tracks her down at a frat party.
The post about the last episode suggested that Sydney may not have attended University. Apparently she did. Sydney casually mentions that she was once a sorority member during the scene leading up to Simon’s beer pong match with Kelsi. Since Simon is a recovering alcoholic and Sydney has no pong skills, Sydney, whose addiction is work, not alcohol, drinks for her dad during the game.
HISTORICAL NOTE: The last time we saw a Gellar character drunk on screen was on Buffy (Season 4 Episode 5 Beer Bad). Check out
Obscurus Lupa’s critique of that Buffy episode.
Other stereotypes are referenced in the show. Several of Lauren’s co-workers believe she is from some exotic place based on her looks. Puerto Rico, Lebanon, Portugal, and Morocco were suggested. Turns out she is from Long Island, as is Amanda Setton. Andrew is presumed by Simon to be Jewish. He isn’t but Zach is. Go figure.
Lauren it seems is addicted to Zach, or at least to having sex with him, but does not find him intellectually stimulating. She begins to have regular conversations with Andrew over coffee to augment her sexual encounters. If Andrew were gay, this arrangement would be excellent. Alas, Andy seems quite hetero and develops a crush on Lauren. Once that happens, Zandrew, Lauren’s perfect man, comes apart at the seams. Lauren finds it easy to make a break with Andrew, and once she does, her addiction to sex with Zach vanishes because it has become irrevocably associated with her now impossible Andrew coffeedates.
Andrew, who has recently broken up with Nancy Cardigan, is forlorn after falling out with both Zach and Lauren (and having been rejected as a suitor by Sydney in an earlier episode). He stands alone in the lobby licking a pistacio ice cream cone. The ice cream falls from the cone and lands with a spat at his feet. Lauren probably really doesn’t feel guilty, but she makes like she does because she is expected to. Kelsi the Intern, seeing Andrew in a vulnerable and pitiable state, asks him out because he is an “older man” and it will piss off her dad. Lauren convinces herself that she willed this to happen. Sydney does not comment.
Brenda Koo (Brooke) will be Cindy in the film WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD, which is based on the 1999 novel by Laura Kasischke. The film will star Shailene Woodley as Kat Connors. It will premiere at the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL on 20 January.
John O’Brien (Larry) was another character named Larry in THE CRAZY ONES episode 9.
