LOST GIRL – Season 4 Episode 4 – SPOILERS
The Una Mens have gargoyles they use as spies. These gargoyles might be distant relatives of Dr. Who’s Weeping Angels. They seem to briefly suck all the light from the room when they move, and have not as yet been seen outdoors. Gargoyles also seem to be able to teleport.
Definition: SPYBANG – have sex with someone in order to distract them from something important or to extract information, usually at the behest of another
First known citation: KENZI (to Lauren LG 2.6): “Let’s cut the crap. I know you did a nice thing, helping Bo against her mom, but you also spybanged her for the Ash and broke her heart.”
Crystal (Ali Liebert) spybanged Lauren in episode 4.3. In this episode, Karen/Lauren/Amber finds herself back in the Ash’s dungeon after Crystal’s betrayal with Crystal chained to a water pipe. She is amazingly not at all irritated at Crystal, possibly because of her own previous personal experience at spybanging, and chats with her former coworker about her rebellious past even after noting that the two of them are being watched (and presumably listened to). The tragic past of Karen Beattie is revealed. In a story somewhat simliar to the story of Autumn Radnor (WAREHOUSE 13 episode #50) Karen (who shall henceforth be known as Lauren) made the explosives for an attack on an oil pipeline by her brother that inadvertently killed a bunch of people. (NOTE: The Karen Beattie storyline began on LOST GIRL with Episode #46 which first aired 31 March 2013. WAREHOUSE 13 episode #50 first aired 36 days later on 6 May 2013. In yet another bit of synchronicity, one of the artifacts in that Warehouse episode was DaVinci’s Gargoyle.)
Lauren at this point still thinks Hale is in charge. He is not, and the Una Mens are not at all concerned with ancient political history. They present Lauren with equipment and samples, commanding her to properly diagnose one of their elders who has fallen ill. In short order, Lauren discovers that the elder is afflicted with spongiform encephalopathy, or as she colourfully describes it, Mad Fae Disease. This disease was discussed by Scully in THE X-FILES episode Our Town. LOST GIRL perhaps acknowledges this by having Kenzi allow teen Tamsin (Eliana Jones) to watch The X-Files while she and Bo head to the Dal for drinks.
Curiously, Doc Lewis suggests that said elder should “lay off the incest”. In humans, the disease can be inherited from someone who did not live long enough to display symptoms, but as Lauren mentions the contents of the elder’s stomach, he probably ate an infected brain, which would not need to be from someone related to him to transmit the infection.
After her diagnosis, and in what was certainly the best moment of the episode, Lauren dramatically sheds her handcuffs and chains (having picked the locks), says that the diagnosis was “childs play”, and demands to see her captor (whom she still believes to be Hale). As @jocool70 remarked (on twitter), Lauren was quite Xena-like in this scene.
Gargoyles are keeping track of Bo, who ends up confronting the Una Mens much like Lauren did, though Lauren and Bo still don’t know where one another are. On the way to that climactic scene, Bo has sex with Dyson, plays Cruise Low by Thunderheist at the Dal, finds out that Kenzi kissed Dyson (episode 4.1), and rescues Tamsin (who has grown back into Rachel Skarsten) from Masimo the Druid (Tim Rozon). The gargoyles have been watching all this, and have informed the Una Mens that Bo has gone over to the dark side. Bo is quite surprised to learn this.
OTHER IMPORTANT STUFF THAT HAPPENS
— Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) grows wings, and is on her “last life”.
— We get to see Kenzi’s bedroom
— Kenzi and Dyson get really cuddly. They are in love. They just don’t know it yet.
Sarah Claire Alan, who was one of the girls with long fingernails at Selene’s spa in episode 4.2, will appear in the first episode of SENSITIVE SKIN, a show being produced by Canada Movie Central, starring Kim Cattrall. It is a remake of the 2005 British comedy of the same name which starred Joanna Lumley, and is about an aging beauty in a disintegrating marriage.
Emmanuelle Vaugier and Kris Holden Ried star in PAUL, about the conversion of Saul the Butcher. Vaugier plays Mary Magdalene in the film, which will be released in Canada in April, 2014.
Christine Horne (The Keeper) is Suzanne in the film TRU LOVE, which stars Shauna MacDonald (Dean Peretti in O Kappa My Kappa) and Kate Trotter (The Norn in 5 LG episodes). It’s about a serial bed-hopping lesbian named Tru (MacDonald) who cannot commit to a relationship or a job for long…that is, until she meets 60 year old Alice (Trotter), a beautiful widow whose daughter (Horne) has a history with Tru. The film was released in the UK on 4 October.
LOST GIRL will premiere on SyFy in the US on 13 January.
