THE CRAZY ONES – Season 1 Episode 6 – SPOILERS
Lauren (Amanda Setton) is being her dark, whimsical self, when Simon asks her if she understands why he needs to win an award, despite all the success he’s had.
LAUREN: “You want to feel like you’re still relevant. That you’re not just part of the past, but also the now.”
SIMON: “Exactly. Don’t you wish there was a green pill for that?”
Simon, you see, is pitching a campaign for a boner pill called Paratis (Latin for ‘ready’). A gospel quintet sings the pill’s praises while Simon pops one of the little green pills and morphs into (silhouetted) Zach. One of the Paratis people, (played by Amy Wickliffe) responds well to the pitch, saying “Well, I don’t know about you gentlemen, but I’m hard as a rock.” Simon later explains to Zach and Andrew that he himself has no problems with erectile function, but has a friend named Simon who does (this turns out to be true). Lots of boner jokes follow, and provide a lead-in to later developments with Sydney and her apparently favourite TV show.
Sydney finds that both her father and her high school crush have been nominated for an Advertising Impact Award. The crush is named Josh Hayes, and Sydney decides to invite him (and all the other nominees) to a cocktail party. Syd’s fantasy about Josh, she says, involves indoor high school snow.
SYDNEY: “In my fantasy, I’m standing at my locker. And then I hear someone say my name. I turn around and it’s Josh, and before I can think of something witty and perfect to say, he kisses me, right there in front of everyone. And then, it starts to snow. And then we start dancing.”
Hayes shows up at the party, sweeping Sydney off her feet. She spends a weekend with him, and afterward discovers that he has appropriated her father’s promotional campaign for himself. Sydney explains it to her father this way: “There was wine, and something like 8 hours of Bones, and I may have mentioned your ad campaign.” Probably out of loyalty to CBS, Simon responds with “I just wish it had been CSI.” (Bones airs on FOX.)
The BEST GELLAR MOMENT is the fall she takes after being tripped up on her way to barging in on Josh by Josh’s assistant Mike (Abraham Lim). She breaks a heel, causing her to hobble through the rest of the scene, and giving her something to wave in Josh’s face as she berates him.
Confronting Josh about his piracy during his pitch to Charmin, Sydney asks him: “Was Bones a lie? I mean, do you even like David Boreanez?”
WHAT WE LEARN ABOUT SYDNEY
1. The snow globe in her office plays “Eternal Flame” to remind her of her high school crush
2. The names she has picked out for her children (yet to be born) are Taylor and Jane
3. She is a fan of David Boreanez
Ryan Raddatz, who wrote this, was Todd, one of Buffy’s co-workers at the Doublemeat Palace, in the BTVS episode AS YOU WERE (Season 6 Episode 15). He should write more for this show. He and director Fred Savage know how to effectively make use of Gellar’s talent for physical comedy.
Michael Landes (Josh Hayes) was Ryan in the 2009 Film POSSESSION, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar. It was a remake of the 2002 Korean film Jungdok, and is pretty good if you watch the alternate ending included on the DVD. (The production company went bankrupt after POSSESSION was made, delaying the film’s release until 2010. POSSESSION was never released in theaters, going directly to DVD.)
Abraham Lim (Mike, Josh’s assistant) was a contender on the second season of The Glee Project. Lim released his first YouTube video on 4 July 2011, and has since amassed a large fanbase and hundreds of thousands of YouTube views.
