Wonder Woman is an Amazon. In fact she is the ultimate Amazon, created from the clay surrounding Themyscira on the river Thermodon, in the northern region of present-day Turkey. The river is now called the Terme and flows into the Black Sea 50 miles east of Samsun. Since the place is an island in Wonder Woman mythology, one can only assume it is one of the many Black Sea islands. It would be the place to which the surviving Amazons retreated after being driven from their original lands, possibly at the end of the Bronze Age. The Amazons encountered by Xena and Gabrielle in Xena Warrior Princess would be the remnants of the original culture that had perhaps colonized part of Thrace.
Athena, Aphrodite, Hestia, Hermes, and Artemis invested her with various superpowers. She has super-speed, the ability to fly, telescopic vision, enhanced intelligence, and super-hearing. She can turn herself back into clay and then return to human form. She can talk to animals. All this made her an excellent athlete, acrobat, fighter and strategist. The point is that she was formed that way. She did not have to learn these things. She was never younger than she appears. She is stronger than Hercules, but unlike Hercules she is not part human. Clearly she can appear however she would wish to appear.
Further to my previous discussion of the casting of the new Wonder Woman series, here are some interesting bits of data:
People who have played Superman and their ages when they started doing that:
George Reeves – 38
Christopher Reeve – 26
Kirk Alyn – 38
Beau Weaver – 36
There was an Indian version of Superman which I really need to watch in which Superman was played by one Puneet Issar. His birthdate is a well-guarded secret.
Then there are the various incarnations of Batman:
Michael Keaton – 38
Adam West – 38
Christian Bale – 31
Val Kilmer – 36
George Clooney – 36
Bill Bixby was 44 when he assumed the role of Bruce Banner, but Lou Ferrigno was 27 when he became The Hulk. Eric Bana was 35 when he did Banner and the Hulk was CGI.
And finally Ioan Griffudd was Reed Richards at 32.
My point being that for male superheroes it is just fine to be over 30.
I still think Traci Dinwiddie should be Wonder Woman.
