Sarah Michelle Gellar is back on TV, this time as Sydney Roberts, Creative Director of the Chicago advertising agency Lewis, Roberts and Roberts. The other Roberts is her dad, Simon, played by Robin Williams. Lewis (who hasn’t turned up yet and so far doesn’t have a first name) will be played by Brad Garrett, who used to be Ray Romano’s big brother.
Simon has only one child, a daughter, but he makes it clear that he wanted a son. Two of his employees, Zach Cropper (James Wolk) and Andrew Keanelly (Hamish Linklater) compete for Simon’s fatherly attentions. Despite this, Sydney seems quite well adjusted. The hot girl in the office is Lauren Slotsky, played by Amanda Setton.
Episode one, which was watched by more than 11 million people, will be ignored here. Episode two gets off to a shaky start with this line from Zach, who is helping direct two models in a commercial: “They’re models,” he says, “They don’t understand anything.”
The second episode has some bright spots. After her giant coffee promotion goes awry spraying hundreds of people with coffee, Sydney says: “I destroyed an entire city block. I’m like a super villain.”
And then there’s this useful bit of wisdom from Simon: “The important thing to know about when cleaning a duck’s anus is to go against the feathers.” (The ducklings have no mother duck to lick them clean, hence the “against the feathers” advice to Zach. Simon is raising ducklings to populate a pond he polluted in the 80’s with a Pop Rocks campaign spectacular. Simon regrets the destruction of all those fish.)
There are two instances of product placements in this episode — Crest toothpaste, and Pop Rocks. Crest is made by Proctor & Gamble, which does animal testing on 80 percent of its products.
Chasty Ballesteros (Carly the model) will be Michelle in the film MALIBU HORROR STORY, a “narrative documentary” about the unsolved disappearance of four Malibu teenagers in 2012, due to be released later this year. The Vancouver actor is also Rachel Ward in the Cinemax series THE GIRL’S GUIDE TO DEPRAVITY.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is now on twitter. Below is her second ever tweet:
