COLD BLOODED (2012) a film by Jason Lapeyre – SPOILERS
In the beginning it’s rookie cop (Frances Jane played by Zoie Palmer) on a (symbolic) bondage date with a charming thief (Cordero, played by Ryan Robbins) They chat about their similarities and dissimilarities. They flirt a bit, but their goals are not compatible and the evening degenerates into something combative.
Just when Constable Jane is winning, the thief’s accomplices arrive, not to free him, but to kill him, and the film turns into a miniature version of DIE HARD. We get to watch as Frances Jane morphs from naive rookie cop into a somewhat cynical, reluctant hero.
In a rather complicated turn of events mid-film, a prisoner (Louis Holland, played by William MacDonald) escapes Jane’s handcuffs by cutting off her left hand, which he takes along with him as he pursues Cordero through the hospital. The need to recover her hand becomes Jane’s driving force and she becomes as ruthless as her enemies, the blood on her face transforming into warpaint.
This film does have a sense of humour. After her hand is severed, Jane catches up to the dude who did the cutting and handcuffs him to a gurney. Somehow the gurney rolls toward an empty elevator shaft (the physics of this is a bit iffy) pulling Holland with it. As he teeters on the edge of oblivion, Holland reaches out for a helping hand. Jane just shrugs slightly and glances at the stump of her left arm.
In the end, when reinforcements arrive, Jane walks away, carrying her severed hand, her face showing the realization that things are a whole lot worse than she originally thought. One can easily imagine that, after her hand is reattached (the film takes place in real time, so even though the hand wasn’t iced, it can probably be restored) she might find a cape and a cowl and turn into the Great White North’s equivalent of Batwoman.
The voice of the dispatcher in COLD BLOODED is that of Naomi Snieckus, who appeared in Episode 9 of LOST GIRL as the talent agent who employed Siobhan the Banshee, and got projectile-puked upon by same. And Snieckus will be Marge in the Christmas TV movie FIR CRAZY, due out later this year. Also in the cast of that film is Inga Cadranel.
Ryan Robbins (Cordero) was Henry Foss in 59 episodes of SyFy’s SANCTUARY. Robbins will play an unspecified character in the film REASONABLE DOUBT, about a District Attorney involved in a hit-run and cover-up. Filmed in Winnipeg, it will be released 23 January in Denmark.
