MOTIVE – Season 1 Episode 10 – SPOILERS
Well, I would have titled it “The Priest Who Never Was”, but the real title is Fallen Angel.
Folksinger Andrea Menard guest starred as Jean Baget in this episode. Menard is currently recording her fourth album, LIFT, and is Eva Malone in the TV Ontario series HARD ROCK MEDICAL about a medical school “deep in the heart of the Canadian Shield in Northern Ontario”. Her song commemorating the return of the Bell of Batoche is now available as a single on iTunes.
Jordana Largy (Rita Sopressa, whose little surprise helps Angie solve this week’s mystery) will be Ramona in next Friday’s CONTINUUM episode on SyFy. . And Largy will be Nan in the 2014 romantic comedy THAT BURNING FEELING about “one giant mystery infection with no end and several possible beginnings”. Also she will be Silvermist in the second episode of ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND, due to air 17 October on ABC.
Fallen Angel is the first episode to focus on the backstory of Detective Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira), who wanted to be a priest, but didn’t like the “politics”. (That could mean the political positions of The Vatican, or internal church politics.) He is “still spiritual” but no longer a Catholic.
We learn this stuff because the victim is a priest, Father Noel Barnett (Tony Nardi). We learn still more about Vega through an ethical judgement he is forced to make at the end of the story. You see, some years previously, Father Barnett happened upon a stash of stolen diamonds and decided to appropriate them in small quantities to finance good works. When the “rightful” owner of said diamonds, Felix Hausman, discovers what the good Father has been doing, he hits the priest with a shovel a couple of times, killing him. It should be noted that Hausman (played by Dustin Milligan) was very stupid. The remaining diamonds were more than enough to pay off the his debts, and the priest was in no position to go to the police.
Vega discovers all this, figures out where the gems were likely hidden, points this out to the surviving priest of the parish, and walks away. Father Heslop (played by Haig Sutherland, who looks and sounds amazingly like Father Mulcahy of the TV version of MASH) finds the diamonds and presumably continues his predecessor’s good works.
When Father Heslop (earlier in the episode) asks Vega why he became a cop, Vega says that the job just found him. Whatever that means.
The church used in Fallen Angel was, in reality, Anglican, not Catholic.
Next week’s MOTIVE (Episode 11, Brute Force, is the boxing episode, and one of the boxers (Ricky ‘Bam Bam’ Perez) will be played by George Tchortov, who has turned up in three LOST GIRL episodes so far. He was one of the “blackwater types” in each of the last two episodes of Season 3, and he played a Dullahan in Where There’s a Will, There’s a Fae. (Dullahans are Fae that can remove their heads.)
ABC will air the last two episodes of MOTIVE’s first season on 29 August (just before the American Labor Day holiday weekend) from 8-10pm Eastern. No decision has yet been made by ABC about picking up the show for next year, although CTV has already renewed it for a second season.
The first episode of MOTIVE Season 2 will be titled Raw Deal.
A CURIOSITY – For those interested in numerology, the detectives found Rita Sopressa (Jordana Largy), the last person Father Barnett helped, at a safe house with the street address 13028. The diamonds were hidden beneath the gravestone numbered 923. The digits of 13028 and 923 both add to 14.
