MOTIVE – Season 1 Episode 9 – SPOILERS
A gun is used for the second time in the series, but it is a weapon relevant to the storyline. The victim is killed with one shot from a Boer War revolver, and there is a nifty little parallel between the way the victim Julia Conrad (Hilary Jardine) treats the killer Marion Rieder (Mary Pat Gleason) and the way that the British Empire treated the farmers of the Transvaal before the outbreak of the first Boer War. Conrad refers to Reader’s cat paintings as kitsch, which is a term that first came into use in the same historical period. Writer James Thorpe also wrote two LOST GIRL episodes that aired this year – Confaegion, and The Ceremony.
This episode features MOTIVE’s first cat, Mathias. In vaguely related cat trivia, set decorator Carol Lavalee also worked on the 2004 film CATWOMAN in the same capacity.
We learn that Angie Flynn does not jog, and that Lucas (Brendan Penny) keeps keys under a rock at the front of his house.
CONTINUUM CROSSOVER: Kimberly Sustad, the barista, was Patsy in Episode #16 of CONTINUUM.
Hilary Jardine will be Collette in a film due out later this year called TEEN LUST, about a high school boy who must lose his virginity or be sacrificed to the devil by his satanic parents. (Not to be confused with the 1978 film of the same title starring Kristin Baker.)
Nicholas Carella (Owen Rieder) will be Bruce in the soon to be released film AFTERPARTY, about an early mid-life crisis, a wedding, and the reunion of the best man’s high school buddies.
Alessandro Juliani (Serge Bisson, the gallery owner for whom the victim worked) used to be Lieutenant Felix Gaeta on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. He will be Prince Carlos in the film BARBIE MARIPOSA AND THE FAIRY PRINCESS, which will be released on 27 August in the US.
