ABSOLUTE DECEPTION, with LOST GIRL’s Emmanuelle Vaugier as investigative reporter Rebecca Scott, was released on DVD shortly before Vaugier’s birthday this Sunday and it is a surprisingly engaging film. Agent Nelson (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is the most charming FBI guy since Fox Mulder.
The film is set on Australia’s Gold Coast, and the main bad guy (Ronald Osterberg played by Chris Betts) is a blend of the worst parts of Bernie Madoff, Mitt Romney, and The Koch Brothers. Rebecca has been investigating this corporate evildoer when she learns (from Agent Nelson) that her husband Miles (Ty Hungerford) has been killed. This surprises her, as she thought he had died in a car accident two years previously. Turns out he faked his death and went to work for Osterberg.
BEST SCENE – What seemed destined to become a Psycho-like shower scene for Vaugier (most of her is seen through frosted glass) turns out to be a dream, but a sound in her hotel room wakes her from it and she fishes pepper spray from her purse and searches for the source of the sound.
WORST SCENE – The depiction of the murder of Bridget Archer (Kelly Atkinson). Not that it is badly filmed or acted, but it is just not necessary and is probably responsible for the film’s R rating.
Gooding and Vaugier are such an entertaining pair that this could work as a TV series.
The DVD is available through both Amazon and Netflix.
