MOTIVE – Season 1 Episode 3 – SPOILERS
Arriving at the murder scene, Dr. Betty (Lauren Holly) channels Mae West, with the line (to Detective Vega): “Have you been putting your hands all over my body?”
Here’s the plot. A waitress, who is working with the smuggler’s limo driver (Greyston Holt), cons a customs agent (Scott Michael Campbell) into ripping off said smuggler. The interesting thing here is that, along with a bunch of cash, the drug being smuggled is a steroid. This is a nice change from the usual heroin or cocaine and highlights the sheer number of drugs that are currently outlawed.
Leanne the Waitress is played by Katherine Isabelle, who was once Marci Salvatore, a potential birth mother interviewed by Bette and Tina in episode #66 of THE L WORD.
This episode of MOTIVE features the series’ first victim to die from a gunshot wound. In episode one, the murder weapon was a sports trophy. Episode two’s victim was killed by an automobile. In the three episodes aired thus far, no suspect has been shot.
To humanize both victim and killer, and make viewers care about motives, newlyweds (played by Madison Smith and Britney Katelyn Miller) are used to introduce the limo driver (victim), and a cute kid (Kennedi Clements) going through customs with her father and a stuffed rabbit is used to introduce the customs agent (killer). The bride, groom, kid, and stuffed bunny have nothing to do with the plot and are never heard from again.
During an interrogation, Angie Flynn emulates the methods of a suspected con artist to get her to agree to testify against the killer. Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) is an unwitting pawn in Flynn’s trickery, and at episode’s end, complains about being ‘used’. Flynn’s ethics are a bit questionable, and it’s nice of the show’s writers to have a character point that out. (It’s like in the previous episode when the prosecutor accuses Flynn and Vega of sloppy police work, despite the fact that it solved the case.)
MOTIVE will be pre-empted by the NBA Playoffs on ABC and will return on 27 June.
Katherine Isabelle (Leanne) and Greyston Holt (Scott the Limo Driver) both have roles in CEDAR GROVE, a new series based on the book by Debbie Macomber. CEDAR GROVE is Hallmark Channel’s first regularly scheduled scripted series and will premiere on 20 July at 8pm Eastern with a two-hour episode.
