LOST GIRL Season 3 Episode 7 – SPOILERS
CORRECTION: In episode 4.11 which first aired in Canada on 26 January 2014, Kenzi’s cousin clearly refers to Bo’s car as a yellow ’69 Camaro. This post described the car as a ’67.
In training for The Dawning, Bo learns from a Lodestar named Stella Nashira (played by Deborah O’Dell) that she must forgive the adoptive mother she hates, and she must do it in person. She and Kenzi hop in the car and head for Grimsly (Bo’s hometown located somewhere Kansas-like) which Bo says is about five hours away. Bo gets points for not insisting that her girlfriend come along to meet her hostile relatives.
With Lauren back in Oz (as good a name as any for whatever city Bo calls home), and Kenzi in the background, this is the first episode of LOST GIRL that Anna Silk owns entirely.
So we get to meet Bo’s other mom, Plus, we get to see Bo’s baby picture, and a photo of her as a teen. We learn that she was chosen more than once as Miss Cherry Blossom (much to the dismay of rival Jessica (Tara Wilson), who falls victim to the Polludnica (Phillipa Domville) and chokes on a cherry pit. We also learn that Bo’s adoptive father has died.
We get to see Kenzi in a white sun dress.
Kenzi gets to stab Bo in the ass with a needle twice.
THE POLLUDNICA (UNDERFAE)
Of course, there is a nasty underfae preying on the locals. The Polludnica (Lady Polly) is a creature from slavic mythology. For some reason, a Polludnica (emphasis on the second syllable) is always female. She appears to people in the midday sun, causing heatstroke, or glare-related accidents. This one wields a sickle and generates small tornados. With some long distance assistance from Trick, Bo and Kenzi manage to trap the beastie in a well.
Bo’s car, which I believe to be a 1967 Camaro SS convertible, will almost certainly become the most expensive bit of memorabilia from the show. It must have one of the medium-sized V-8’s because when they fill up on gas they use premium and the six would take regular. There is a sign on the side of the pump warning that the gas contains lead. Leaded gas has been banned for automobiles in the US (even Kansas) and Canada for more than 15 years.
SILK’S BIG SCENE
The most important part of this episode, at least to anyone who has come out to their parents as gay and been rejected because of it, is Bo’s final conversation with her adoptive mother, who is suffering from dementia, and only occasionally remembers that she thinks Bo is evil. The last scene with Nola Augustson is absolutely brilliant.
BO: Mom, I know that you thought the way you chose to raise me was right. I see that now. And when you screamed and yelled at me like I was evil it’s because you didn’t really understand who I was. Neither did I. We were both scared.
BO’s MOM: [struggling to find something to say] No. You don’t need to be scared.
BO: I have a family, mama, and they love and protect me without question. That girl that I came here with, she’s like my sister. When I’m with her I know that everything’s going to be OK. And I found my grandfather, mama, and he cares about me. I don’t know what I’d do without him – without any of them. If you really knew me now, you’d be proud. I am good, and I don’t need to carry around all those terrible memories anymore. I am done. I am telling you I am really done living and re-living them.
BO’s MOM: Beth, your eyes are so beautiful.
BO: It’s OK. You know how I’m gonna remember you? As the cute woman who taught me how to make fat pies. You had a hard life too. I can’t hate you anymore, and I’m done hating myself. I’m not a devil, mama. I’m fae, that’s all.
Phillipa Domville, who was the Polludnica, played Beth in a 2009 George Romero zombie flick called SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD. Also in that film was Athena Karkanis (Nadia in 7 LOST GIRL episodes). Karkanis’ character was “Tomboy”. The film is available on DVD.
LOST GIRL has been renewed for a fourth season by Showcase Canada, and by SyFy.
UPDATE: Tammy Gillis (Marissa in TABLE FOR FAE) will appear in the 14 March episode of MOTIVE on CTV. (The show was moved to Thursday -10pm ET.) It will be seen on ABC in the US this summer.
