BODY OF PROOF- Season 3 Episode 1 SPOILERS
Dana Delany‘s BODY OF PROOF returned last week after an absence of almost a year. The show has been altered somewhat in an effort to boost ratings.
Megan’s boss is still Kate Murphy (Jeri Ryan). Murphy’s hair is now a much lighter shade of blonde and she has decided to run for Congress. This is designed to create more tension between Murphy and Hunt because Hunt likes to make waves, and waves disrupt political campaigns. One wonders if the writers are aware of how unpopular Congress is at the moment.
The main new guy in the show is Detective Tommy Sullivan (Mark Valley) and I don’t like him. He’s a shoot-from-the-hip kind of cowboy cop who clearly believes that the ends justify the means. I like to think that he came to Philadelphia because he got into trouble with the NYPD and they politely suggested that he transfer to elsewhere. The official story is that he returned to Philly to re-ignite a failed past relationship with Megan Hunt. The introduction of Detective Sullivan is supposed to insert some sexual tension into the show.
His partner, Detective Adam Lucas (Elyes Gabel), seems OK, but really hasn’t said or done much so far.
Megan heads back to work after spending 3 months at home recovering from the episode at the end of Season 2. Since her old assistant is dead, the coroner’s office has hired her a new one (Charlotte Tilney, played by Erin Cahill).
Tilney is inexperienced, somewhat irritating, and altogether charming. Megan, who has not quite recovered from the death of her previous assistant, treats her new helper like dirt until she quits. This is unfortunate, since Charlotte is exactly the sort of character that Dana Delany needs to interact with regularly to add some humour and make this show work. Wendell Middlebrooks and Jeffrey Arend are sometimes funny, but they don’t interact with Delany’s character all that much. There is no indication that Charlotte will ever become a regular character on BODY OF PROOF, but Cahill will be Felicity in the new ABC series RED WIDOW which will have a 2-hour premiere on 3 March. (Why BODY OF PROOF didn’t get a 2 hour premiere instead of splitting the first story into two parts, I have no idea.)
The plot of episode one is as follows: Veterans are turning up dead with their spleens missing, and surgical mesh in their abdominal cavities indicating that something may have been implanted there. There is a plastic surgeon involved (now dead at the hands of cowboy cop), as well as his assistant, whose husband died in Afganistan. To further muddy the waters, the bad guys kidnap Megan’s daughter to put a stop to her investigation.
Could this be a smuggling operation? Will Charlotte return? Will someone reign in Detective Sullivan? More after Part 2, Tuesday night on ABC.
NOTE: Erin Cahill was Tyler in Episode #43 of another Medical Examiner show, CROSSING JORDAN (the episode where someone drops a body from a plane and almost hits Woody).
