Muscovites dropping dead from the heat at an alarming rate and the destruction of a large portion of their wheat crop, coupled with wildfires that consumed a lot of forests and villages. All this seems to have made Moscow rethink their policies on global warming. Russia is north. Moscow is five degrees farther north than Calgary, Alberta. The temperature increases will be worse the farther north one goes because of the permafrost, snow, and ice. As that is reduced the temperature rise in the immediate vicinity is going to be dramatic.
In lower latitudes the jet stream, forced southward and straightened by northern high pressure, will cause stagnant weather systems. When all that moisture comes down quite a bit of it will come down in severly localized areas and major flooding will occur (see Pakistan).
The tropics will see more violent, faster-moving weather systems.
So what needs to occur in the US to convince Americans that global warming is a threat that needs to be dealt with? If there is another dust bowl it will be blamed by oil company advocates on low solar activity or gay marriage or something.
The Russians are on board for dealing with climate change. What’s it going to take to get the US and China in the boat?
