Sara Canning (Polly Miller in “Been Away“) is Venice in AN AWKWARD BALANCE (original title “Fucking Idiots”), a dark comedy about a married couple (Sarah and Mike, played by Stephan Lobo and Christina Sicoli) who find themselves in considerable financial difficulties and try to solve them by involving a “successful” friend Paul (Ben Cotton) in their S&M tinged personal spending aversion therapy. Paul then suffers a breakdown and confesses to his own financial problems and impending bankruptcy. Then Venice, an outsider, arrives, and adds a new perspective to the mix. Directed by David Milchard and written by Kris Elgstrand, AN AWKWARD BALANCE is expected to be released in Canada later this year.
Canning also stars as Maggie in the short film THE QUIETING. Maggie is a woman in her thirties who, on the eve of her first date with a woman, finds herself dealing with coming out in unexpected ways. Writer/director Ali LIebert told Adrian Mack of The Georgia Straight: “It is my story. It may seem kind of specific — a motherless, late-blooming queer — but I’m hoping the themes reach a wider group of people. I’ve only really been out for five years. There aren’t a lot of stories about people coming out in their 30s or older. The night before my first date with a woman was such a turning point for me, and it was something I felt I wanted to share.” THE QUIETING will screen as part of the 2020 Inside Out Film Festival. (The festival runs from 1-11 October and has gone digital this year.) A trailer is available on Twitter.
Karen Lam, who wrote “Stay Away“, directs THE CURSE OF WILLOW SONG, the story of a young Asian woman who is released from prison and must chose between a dangerous new life on the streets, and her former life as a gang member. Lam, who also wrote the screenplay, described the film to Darren Weisner of Hollywood North Magazine: “It’s about a young woman that gets released from prison and her family are gangsters that she is ordered to have no contact with. She’s living in the East side in a halfway house and things go south for her – the next thing you know, she’s back with the family and tasked with watching an abandoned warehouse that her family uses for money laundering. She begins seeing things in the warehouse – but…[is]the girl haunted or is the warehouse haunted?” THE CURSE OF WILLOW SONG won Leo Awards for Best Directing and Best Cinematography, and will premiere in Toronto this fall.
Holly Elissa (Jennifer in “Miles and Miles“) is Bristol’s mother Greta in DAS KINDERMÄDCHEN – MISSION KANADA (The Nanny: Mission Canada), the third in a series of comedies about traveling nanny Henriette Höffner (Saskia Vester). In this one, Henni is looking forward to relaxing on Vancouver Island because her new assignment sounds simple. She is to take care of 13-year-old Bristol (Trixi Janson) while her father Christopher (Jens Atzorn) is preparing for his second wedding. It turns out that Christopher’s future wife Pia (Luise Wolfram) is pregnant, but that is a secret, and Bristol is only outwardly nice, and quickly shows Henni her nasty side. To complicate matters further, Bristol’s mom has plans to move far away and take Bristol with her. Filming was completed in British Columbia last December. DAS KINDERMÄDCHEN – MISSION KANADA will air on Das Erste in Germany later this year.
