Suliane Brahim (Laurène Weiss) will star as Virginie in the upcoming fantasy/horror feature THE SWARM (La nuée), a film that is in no way related to the 1978 American disaster movie. Virginie is a single mother who lives on a farm with her two children and breeds edible grasshoppers. Life is difficult and relations with her neighbours are tense, but all that changes when she discovers that the particular variety of insect she is breeding have a taste for blood. Directed by Just Philippot from a screenplay by Jérôme Genevray and Franck Victor, THE SWARM will be in French theatres on 4 November.
Naidra Ayadi (Leïla Barami) portrays a (so far) unnamed character in OUR MEN (Mon légionnaire), the story of French Foreign Legion families being put to test by the war against terrorism in Sahel. The film tells the story of Nika (Ina Marija Bartaité), a woman in her twenties who leaves Ukraine to follow her boyfriend Vlad, (Aleksandr Kuznetsov), a young soldier who is based in a military camp in Corsica. While there, she meets Céline (Camille Cottin), the wife of Commander Maxime (Louis Garrel). Writer/director Rachel Lang said in a statement: “How can one be in the right place, in an equitable and equally intense relationship, with another person? The Foreign Legion puts the couple under great stress-that is why I chose it as my setting…When the legionnaire enlists, he commits to having no life of his own for the next 5 years: he takes a new name, is forbidden to leave the territory, cannot get a loan for an apartment or a car, and is forbidden to marry or to recognize any children. What becomes of a couple in this context?” OUR MEN wrapped filming in France (and Morocco) last fall.
Laurent Capelluto (Franck Siriani) will be Jean-François, l’agent in the comedy/drama MY BEST PART (Garçon chiffon), which stars Nicolas Maury as Jérémie Meyer, an upcoming actor in the midst of a midlife crisis. Jérémie retreats to his mother’s country home following a series of romantic and professional setbacks in Paris, but finds little solace there. Maury also directs the film, and co-wrote the screenplay with Maud Ameline. He suggested to Screendaily that his character is partially a self portrayal: “I lay myself bare, getting as close as possible to ‘auto-fiction’. My film attempts to joyously repair the injuries, disasters and desperation of all my characters.” MY BEST PART will premiere on 28 August at the Angoulême Film Festival, and will be released in France on 28 October.
Anne Suarez (Léa Steiner) will be The Lawyer in MOUSEY (Maoussi), a romantic comedy that bills itself as a “contemporary fable”, and stars the film’s writer/director Charlotte Schioler as Babette, a forty-year-old dancer from Denmark who gets a call from a friend who asks if she can put up a Congolese drummer (Edo, played by Moustapha Mbengue) for a couple of weeks. When she accepts she has no idea how much her small, comfortable world is about to be challenged, not only by Edo, but also by an escaped lab mouse that appears in her life at the same time. MOUSEY was filmed in Paris in the summer of 2019. No release date has been announced.
