WYNONNA EARP – Season 4 Episode 2 – SPOILERS
The WayHaught love scene at the end has deservedly gotten a great deal of attention, but there are other very interesting things in this episode written by showrunner Emily Andras.
A stone throne, three crystals each with a different face, a force field, and replicator technology. All these things are present and suggest that The Garden in which Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Doc (Tim Rozon) find themselves is technological in nature rather than mystical. The throne reminds of the control chair from STARGATE SG1 (with wings added).
The three crystals, each of which present a different face of a shapeshifting creature called Eve (who is apparently unconnected to the name Willa took while involved with that Season two cult.) seem to be part of a machine which controls the force field in which Eve is imprisoned. One of the faces presented is Nicole’s, indicating that Eve has taken her form. Why Eve appears as a nude Nicole is a bit of a mystery, since shapeshifters can usually take on the shape of a clothed form. Eve must be telepathic, and took the image of Nicole from Waverly’s mind. The cherry/apple tree that Waverly caused to appear at the end of Episode 4.1 may have been generated with replicator technology.
We learn that Valdez (mother of Rachel) died keeping an interdimensional portal (through which Eve at episode’s end manages to escape her prison) closed.
In Episode 4.13 of LOST GIRL (also written by Emily Andras) Kenzi died in a similar fashion, and was later found alive in Hell. On VAN HELSING (another SyFy show with which Andras is completely unconnected) Vanessa Van Helsing recently wrestled Dracula through a portal and afterward found herself in a “dark domain”.
Eve must have been in stasis (another instance of technology) prior to Waverly’s arrival (she had no apparent food supply) and when the Tree was created she was awakened. She is an apparently telepathic shapeshifter. The tree is either a hologram (unlikely since Eve-in-the-form-of-Nicole takes some of the branches to wear) or is generated on the spot by some sort of replicator.
Was Valdez drawn into the portal instead of being killed? Has Eve escaped to the Ghost River Triangle, and, if so, will it contain her in the same way that it contained the Revenants? And who built The Garden?
