WYNONNA EARP – Season 4 Episode 1 – SPOILERS
The Garden where Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Doc (Tim Rozon) are trapped turns out to be a frozen wasteland. Doc finds Wynonna’s sister chained to a rock. The chains (she tells him) are tightening, and Doc discovers that this is because they are tied to a large, apparently organic mass which has been thrown down a well. Doc frees whatever it is from the well (he himself was freed from a similar hole in the ground some years previously) and takes the pressure off. There seems to be a general consensus that this strange unknown blob is significant. @EarperBex noted on Twitter (perhaps not entirely seriously): “…it reminds me of Beljoxa’s Eye from Buffy” (Beljoxa’s Eye appeared in Episode 7.11 of Buffy. It was a large, extra-dimensional creature with many eyes of many sizes. It could not see the future, only the truth of the present and the past.) @kko5572 speculated: “It looks like a gigantic version of the seeds that Bulshar was forcing down people’s throats in S3” and @gin_gasi suggested that it might be Jolene (the demon with a talent for baking played by Zoie Palmer in Episode 3.5, who was in the end absorbed by a tree).
Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and Officer Haught (Kat Barrell) meet on the road to a town called Monument. (Wynonna has a flat tire and Haught comes upon her after jumping from a train which might well have been also headed to the same town.) Wynonna is headed there searching for a back door to The Garden. The two of them drive to Monument where they encounter Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis), and a room full of zombies which they manage to accidentally awaken with explosives. While fleeing from the zombies, Rachel warns against stepping on the black grates in the floor. Wynonna steps on one, and is pushed off by Officer Haught, who falls through into a dark hole. Later, Doc encounters Haught in The Garden. She has shed all her clothing and seems unaware of that, or very much else.
Happenings in The Garden are sufficiently mysterious and mystical that they might be being dreamed by Doc and/or Waverly, but the upshot of all of it is that Waverly is presented with four books named Doc Holliday, Nicole Haught, Waverly Gibson, and Wynonna Earp along with instructions to “Choose one. Choose wisely.” She chooses one and puts it in her bag. We don’t get to see who is the chosen one.
Though the scene where Kate (Chantel Riley) helps Haught escape from the train and goes full vampire on her captors is pretty impressive, the episode’s best scene happens when Wynonna finds Mercedes (Dani Kind) in her kitchen. “It’s nice to see a familiar face,” says Wynonna, then she grabs Mercedes by the chin. “It is you in there, isn’t it?” Mercedes responds with the best line of the episode. “Everything behind the tits.”
MERCEDES: “And then these manly black trucks surrounded my house, and Kate, she was like “No, you’re too beautiful to die.’ and then I was like ‘No way. We are in this together.'”
WYNONNA: “So you guys totally boinked.”
MERCEDES: “But I think she must have vampire mind-mushed me, because the next thing I know, I am running away from the house and just waiting for the frigging heir to show up.”
Mercedes is the cheerful, hopeful relief in this rather dark episode. She’s the only character who smiles, and the only character who doesn’t seem Bergmanesque.
Will Kate escape from the train? How will Doc and Waverly escape from The Garden? Is Mercedes’ last name significant? What was Waverly’s choice? And just what did Doc Holliday pull out of that well?
