SIREN -Season 3 Episode 3 – SPOILERS
Ben (Alex Roe) seems to be afflicted with the same condition that destroyed Decker. (Aldon Decker was the guy who captured Ryn’s sister and experimented on her for the Navy. He became addicted to mermaid song and drowned in Episode 1.10.) With the best of intentions, Ben digs up a dead mermaid (just like Decker’s successor Kyle did), harvests her stem cells and injects himself with them. The idea is to prove to his father that continuing the treatment is safe for his mom (who has somehow developed greatly increased lung capacity, but still cannot walk). Decker and Kyle were both exploiting mermaids in an attempt to cure paralyzed former solders, and it’s a fair bet that Kyle also was exposed to the song. When Ryn finds out what Ben has done, she will not likely be pleased about it.
Then there’s Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola). Maddie is the only fully human female we have seen have significant interaction with merfolk. When Ryn is stricken with abdominal pain, Maddie takes her to see Dr. Leena. In the episode’s best scene Leena finds it impossible to conceal the existence of the baby from Ryn. The doctor (who really should be given a last name) explains to Ryn that her baby is alive and growing inside someone named Meredith. When the Doctor leaves, Ryn and Cami decide to follow.
Instead of immediately joining the mermaids in pursuit of Leena, Maddie stops to call Rob Wellens to explain that she won’t be able to join him on an ocean cleanup mission. (She could easily have made that call from the car while following the doctor.) The symptoms might be less severe, but, like Ben, Maddie seems to have a compromised decision-making process caused by her exposure to mermaid song.
Realizing the mermaids have left without her and taken her car, Maddie calls Xander (Ian Verdun), who is on the verge of succeeding as a law enforcement trainee and maybe getting a new girlfriend. Xander immediately drops what he is doing and gives Maddie a ride. Maddie and Xander were lovers a long time ago, and it might just be possible that Xander still harbours feelings for her.
Ryn (Eline Powell) uses that healing hands thing that she used on Ben’s mother and calms her child in Meredith’s womb. Bryan (David Cudmore), the hybrid charged with keeping knowledge of the child from Ryn, is killed by Cami (Millan Tesfazgi) just before Xander and Maddie show up. Characters that are killed off on SIREN are mostly those for whom little sympathy has been cultivated. The only exception that comes to mind is Donna, Ryn’s sister.
Meanwhile, in the water, Tia (Tiffany Lonsdale) has retaken the leadership of her tribe by introducing a new weapon, a spring-loaded spear. If she can equip her tribe with those, she will be very hard to defeat.
On land, Helen (Rena Owen) takes a hallucinogen (obtained by Eliza) in an attempt to once again communicate with the ghost of Sarge, but her vision brings her face to face with the spectre of Donna (Sibongile Mlambo), which promptly disintegrates in front of her. (This takes place near Bristol Cove’s statue of 19th century mermaid murderer Charles Pownall.) The meaning of this vision is not entirely clear.
But it might have something to do with Ted Pownall’s adamant opposition to his wife’s treatment with mermaid stem cells. He only recently learned that merfolk actually exist, but he seems to have developed an instant dislike for them, and that makes one wonder what exactly happened on the night of the boating accident that paralyzed Elaine. What we have been told about that does not adequately explain what’s going on.
Will Ted Pownall go off the deep end? Will Ryn find technology to counter Tia’s spring-loaded spear? Will Xander help cover up a suspicious death, and then continue his law enforcement training? Will Maddie run off to the garbage patch with Wellens? Will Ben and his mom turn into merfolk, or just acquire specific powers? (Is this a superhero origin story? Has there ever been a mother/son superhero duo?)
Daniel Cudmore (Bryan) will be Keith Spivey, a nurse at the hospital where Daimon and Ana’s mother has been institutionalized, in MARVEL’S HELSTROM, a ten-episode series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Daimon Helstrom (Tom Austen) an ethics professor whose true vocation is exorcism (He also has the ability to travel to and from hell), and his sister Ana (Satana in the books — played by Sydney Lemmon), who runs an auction house but in her spare time hunts down people who inflict pain on others, reminding her of her father. (Dad is the demon Marduk Kurios.) HELSTROM is likely to be on HULU later this year.
Carolyn Anderson (the mermaid leader deposed by Tia) is a security guard in RIDDLED WITH DECEIT: A MARTHA’S VINEYARD MYSTERY, the second Hallmark adaptation of Phillip R. Craig’s series of novels. Retired Boston Police Detective Jeff Jackson (Jesse Metcalfe) teams up with his childhood friend Dr. Zee Madeiras (Sarah Lind) to track down a missing five million dollar emerald broach, and solve a murder. RIDDLED WITH DECEIT will next air on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries on Sunday 19 April at 7/6c. (Anderson also was stunt double for Rena Owen in the SIREN episode “Aftermath“.)
