Steven Strait (Jim Holden) will be Gene Simmons, one of the lead singers for KISS, in SPINNING GOLD, the story of Neil Bogart and the music of the artists who thrived on his Casablanca Records label in the 1970s. The film is written and directed by Neil Bogart’s son, Timothy Scott Bogart, who told Mike Fleming of Deadline: “My father was making $100 million a year at the height of Casablanca, but he quote-unquote ‘forgot’ to pay his taxes, and my inheritance amounted to three years at NYU, a Dodge Daytona and the rights to this story…When I ask people who were around my father what it was like, they inevitably say a variation of the same thing. That is, ‘I don’t know how I survived it or if I would do it again, but I had the greatest fucking time of my life.’” The film’s soundtrack will be released through Boardwalk Records. SPINNING GOLD was filmed in Montreal last summer. No release date has been announced.
Dominique Tipper (Naomi Nagata) will be Bastian in the romantic drama MONDAY, which stars Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough as Mickey and Chloe, two Americans in their thirties living in Athens who meet in the heat of summer for one intense weekend. When Chloe’s scheduled time in Greece comes to an end, she decides to quit her job and stay a while, to explore whether or not one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable “Monday after”. Director Argyris Papadimitropoulos, who co-wrote the script with Rob Hayes, told Variety: “The story of Mickey and Chloe is an unflinching and fun take on the romantic relationship of two people who crave each other but are also hindered by the baggage each brings to the table. MONDAY is both a celebration of bigger-than-life romances, and a love letter to my city.” The film will have its premiere at the (postponed) 2020 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
Shohreh Aghdashloo (Chrisjen Avasarala) has an as yet unspecified role in Shana Feste‘s horror feature RUN SWEETHEART RUN. Cherie (Ella Balinska), a secretary and single mom still recovering from an abusive relationship, agrees to go on a date with someone recommended by her boss (Clark Gregg). After a tedious dinner, Cherie’s date Ethan (Pilou Asbaek) invites her back to his place for a drink. At first she hesitates, then eventually agrees, but once there, she is violently attacked. She escapes with her dress ripped, in shock and running for her life. Kate Erbland, writing for Indiewire, said: “Feste doesn’t linger on physical violence in the film, instead opting for some clever, confrontational camera work to keep the focus literally away from its most painful moments…Betsy Brandt’s queasy supporting turn as Gregg’s wife and a late appearance by a self-possessed Shohreh Aghdashloo help sell the belief that Cherie has gotten trapped in the middle of something much bigger, weirder, and evil than she initially anticipated.” RUN SWEETHEART RUN premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and is scheduled for US release on 8 May.
Shawn Doyle (Sadavir Errinwright) will be Bill Priestap, former assistant director of the FBI Counterintelligence Division (the guy who opened the investigation into Trump’s possible collusion with the Russians) in the four-episode miniseries A HIGHER LOYALTY, an adaptation of former FBI Director James Comey‘s memoir “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership“. Jeff Daniels will play Comey, and Trump will be played by Brendan Gleeson. Comey led the investigation into Russian election interference in the 2016 U.S. election until Trump fired him on 9 May 2017. After his firing, Comey asserted that Trump was “morally unfit to be president“. CBS has not yet decided if A HIGHER LOYALTY should be broadcast on Showtime, CBS All Access, or both.
Doyle will also be Scott Riley in Episode 3 of the fourth and final season of CARDINAL, which is subtitled “Until the Night” (the title of the final book in the series of mysteries by Giles Blunt). Cardinal and Delorme will face a calculated killer in the midst of a severe Algonquin Bay winter. (In the book, the detectives find the frozen body of a Senator’s wife in the ruins of an abandoned hotel.) CARDINAL Season Four will premiere on CTV in Canada on 6 April at 10pm.
