It’s a Western. It’s dystopian science fiction. It’s DEFIANCE, SyFy’s projected new series, that has somehow gobbled up Jaime Murray and scuttled any potential WAREHOUSE 13 spinoff with H.G. Wells. Here’s the premise:
A far piece into the future, humans fight an interstellar war. They lose, and Earth is colonized and terraformed into a place more comfortable for the victors.
Near as I can tell, DEFIANCE is the name of the mining town in which the story is set. Tony Curran (Vincent van Gogh on Dr. Who) will be a prominent and influential Castithan named Datak Tarr, and his wife, Shatma, will be played by Jaime Murray. The Castithans home planet was destroyed in the war. The town’s Sheriff, Jeb Nolan will be played by New Zealander Grant Bowler (Cooter on TRUE BLOOD). My favourite vampire from Buffy, Julie Benz, will be Amanda Rosewater, the town’s recently elected, idealistic mayor.
It is possible that the Mayor’s name is an homage to Kurt Vonnegut’s Eliot Rosewater.
Stephanie Leonidas plays Irisa, the sheriff’s adopted daughter. The name Irisa means “rainbow”.
Since this is EUREKA’s last season, it is good that SyFy is attempting science fiction again. It will contrast nicely with the steampunk, the fantasy, and the wrestling.
DEFIANCE will be written by Rockne O’Bannon, Kevin Murphy, and Michael Taylor. O’Bannon was responsible for FARSCAPE, and SEAQUEST 2032. Murphy wrote episodes #14 and #18 of CAPRICA. Taylor wrote 20 episodes of STAR TREK:VOYAGER, and a whole lot of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
The show will begin filming in Toronto this April.
