KILLJOYS – Season 5 Episode 9 – SPOILERS
On Qresh, there are families who rule (nine of them) and there are families who serve. The Robbels are among the serving clans. but in exchange for arms to fight The Lady, Kendry promises them a seat at the Council of Nine, which should turn it into the Council of Ten (unless someone else gets bumped out). Aneela hasn’t revealed herself as the heir to the Kin Rit lands because the time isn’t right and “things might get stabby”, but when she does reveal herself, that will bring the total number of ruling families to eleven. (The Kin Rits, according to Aneela, were the original ruling family, and chose the other nine.)
Have the Kin Rit lands been abandoned since Khlyen’s departure? If not, who’s acting as caretaker there? Also, if Kendry and Aneela marry, does it unify the two families, and would that mean they have only one vote on the council?
The best moment of the episode has to be when Evi and Sylas Robbel (Clare McConnell and Kjartan Hewitt) unexpectedly and sensually show their gratitude to Kendry for granting them a seat on the ruling council of Qresh. Kendry later tells D’Avin “they give good grovel.”
Dutch finds out that Aneela is alive. Khlyen (Rob Stewart) finds out that Dutch is alive, and Pree (Thom Allison) finds out that Dutch, D’Avin, and Johnny are alive. The fog prevents us from seeing any detail, but Carl (Jameson Kraemer), the WestHole Prison guard who moonlights as a smuggler, gets eaten by one of The Lady’s little ones. (We still don’t have a name for their species.)
Dutch gives an inspirational speech to her prisoner recruits, and more or less promises them that they will become “protectors” of The Quad, should they survive the fight. Pree inspires those hiding in the Royale with a song. Dutch teases Johnny about his flirting with The Warden (whose first name we still don’t know), and D’Avin tells Dutch that he loves her.
Gared (Gavin Fox) tries to lead Khlyen into a trap. Khlyen figures out Gared’s deception quickly, but once he finds out that his daughter is still alive, he willingly goes along with Gared’s ruse. (Somehow, he fails to anticipate being captured by Dutch and the others.) When Dutch tells him her plan to destroy the Lady’s offspring in Old Town, he worries that The Lady will strike back by destroying the entire Quad.
And she would have done just that, had it not been for a signal her ship received from the Khlyen Cube with Jaq inside it. The Lady brings the cube onto her ship, but does not know that Jaq is asleep inside. (One can see out but one cannot see in.) She also can’t get in, since it is keyed to Dutch’s DNA. Khlyen would have been able to open it, but since he has been captured, The Lady will need to rely on whatever knowledge of Hullen technology is available to her to crack it open, unless Jaq opens it himself from the inside. (He probably doesn’t need to. Since Jaq must have sent a signal to The Lady from the cube, it follows that he can communicate with her without opening the thing.)
From what Khlyen tells them, they figure out that all of old town, not just the factory, must be destroyed, so they do that using the missiles provided by the Robbels. Pree advises that everyone who wasn’t eaten by The Lady’s offspring has escaped to the badlands, so the remaining population of Old Town is now living in the badlands of a moon which has been significantly modified to suit an alien species. It’s a good thing only the factories in Old Town were destroyed. The others will be needed to correct the alterations to the moon’s atmosphere. They might even at the same time correct some of the climate difficulties (like the black rain) that were there before The Lady arrived.
