On LOST GIRL, Ksenia Solo is cute little Kenzi, Bo’s indispensible sidekick, who displays ill-concealed attraction for Bo, and has little hope of ever getting anywhere with her. Bo saves her life by sucking the essence out of a guy who was preparing to kill Kenzi, and Kenzi, who was a homeless pickpocket, reacts by moving in with her and becoming her assistant.
Sidekicks are not big on TV these days. The only parallel to Kenzi I can think of is Ellen Page‘s character in the movie SUPER. Not that Kenzi is psychotic, but she is over-the-top flaky. Ksenia Solo is every bit as good in this role as Page was as Boltie, and she doesn’t even need a costume.
Bo, the main character in the show, is a succubus.
“Succubus” is a word laden with accidental associations, and LOST GIRL, now airing on SYFY in the U.S (10pm Mondays)., takes good advantage of them. Anna Silk is Bo, who discovers in her mid-20’s that she is a fae and a succubus, and moreover that she is a child of royal faerie blood abandoned shortly after her birth by parents who wanted to shield her from their enemies. This came as something of a relief to Bo, who thought herself some sort of serial killer.
Upon discovering that she can use her powers in a controlled way, Bo decides to become a private investigator. Okay she’s unlicensed and lives in an abandoned building, but let’s skip over that. So what exactly are her powers?
She can kill with a kiss. Her touch is like Dracula’s stare, putting people under her spell. She seems to have extraordinary strength and healing powers, which she recharges by sucking life force from either humans (killing them) or from other fay who can control how much of their life force she is
allowed to consume.
The series started out a bit slowly. There were some mistakes in the first three episodes, such as the time Bo tasered a bad guy while firmly grasping his bare arm in her left hand. She would have zapped herself as well. But by Episode 4, the show has been debugged, and bisexual Bo and her sidekick Kenzi are both believable and charming.
The show also has a werewolf. Kris Holden-Reid plays Dyson, a fae who transforms into, not a wolfman, but an actual wolf. This is sort of a Native American take on the werewolf legend, which is interesting since the mythology of the series seems to be Celtic.
But Kenzi is the best part of LOST GIRL.
