Vincent D’Onofrio (Father Dan) will be Vincent Gigante, future boss of the Genovese crime family, in GODFATHER OF HARLEM. The miniseries tells the story of mobster Bumpy Johnson (played by Forest Whitaker) who returned to Harlem after ten years in prison and found his neighbourhood controlled by the Genovese family. Johnson waged a brutal battle to regain control, and in the process, formed an alliance with Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch). (The film is set after the Valachi hearings in the 1960s, when Vito Genovese was in prison.) Joanne Kelly (WAREHOUSE 13) appears in three episodes as Amy Vanderbilt. The ten episode series will be on EPIX sometime in the fall.
D’Onofrio is also Sheriff Romero in THE KID, the story of Rio (Jake Shur) and his older sister Sarah (Leila George) who inadvertently get tangled up in Pat Garrett’s pursuit of Billy the Kid. THE KID can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video, and on Google Play.
Sarah Giles (Abigail McGrath-Dufresne) will be Beta Jessica in HOME BEFORE DARK, a ten episode series based on the true story of Hilde Lysiak, who began her career as an crime reporter at the age of nine when she reported on a murder in her neighbourhood and launched her own newspaper to publish the story. (She still publishes The Orange Street News in Selinsgrove, PA). The TV series stars Brooklynn Prince as a young girl from the city who moves to a small lakeside town to live with her father. Once there, she finds clues that lead her to a cold case in which her father might be involved. HOME BEFORE DARK wrapped filming in Vancouver in April, and should be available on Apple TV+ (the yet-to-be-launched Apple streaming service) later this year.
Avan Jogia (Roman Mercer) is Stéphane in THE EXCHANGE, a comedy set in the 1980s about a nerdy, introverted high school senior (Tim, played by Ed Oxenbould), who signs up for a foreign student exchange program in hopes of importing a sophisticated best friend from France. What he actually gets is something quite different — a “cologne-soaked, chain-smoking, sex-obsesessed” guy who quickly becomes popular with everyone but Tim. The story is based on writer Tim Long’s own small town high school experiences. Jayli Wolf of MOWHAWK GIRLS is also in the cast, as is Kathryn Greenwood (Ruth on CAVENDISH). THE EXCHANGE is directed by Dan Mazer, and recently completed filming in and around Ottawa, Ontario.
Kristin Lehman (Marilyn McGrath-Dufresne) will be makeup artist Lisa in the web series HOSPITAL SHOW, a comedy about a group of actors who play doctors on television. Sarah Canning plays a character called Charlie. (One cannot help but wonder if the character was named after Dr. Charlie Harris of SAVING HOPE.) In an interview with YVR Screen Scene, Creator Adam Greydon Reid described the show: “This is a workplace comedy about people who pretend to be doctors and wear white coats for a living. If you’re an actor, you know: it ain’t glamorous. You go to work, you meet nice people in make-up, you go to your trailer, you get your clothes on, and you go in and you do the scenes for 14 hours. It’s hard work. It’s a job. It’s a fun job, but I really wanted to normalize that world and make it so that those characters were truly approachable.” The eleven episode series is currently in production. A trailer is available on YouTube.
