VAN HELSING – Season 3 Episode 12 – SPOILERS
After twenty-three days on the island, Scarlett, unable to build a functional raft, discovers an inflatable life raft under her bed and makes it to the mainland. Sometime previous to that (it is about 80 kilometers from Denver to Loveland so the travel time between the two is much shorter than 23 days), Phil (Vincent Gale) and Joline (Caroline Cave) escape the prison bus taking them to Loveland. An organized manhunt is launched to recapture the prisoners (though Denver has been attacked and occupied by The Sisterhood, and one would think the surviving humans there would have better things to do).
Phil and Joline are chained together when they escape, and this forces them to capture one of their pursuers and use his gun to break the chain. Joline wants to return to Denver and find Sarah (aka Doc). Phil wants to continue to Loveland and find his wife. They decide to split up, but then Phil takes three bullets for Joline, saving her life and convincing her to go to Loveland first to aid Phil in his quest for closure.
Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) meets up with Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) at the appointed place (the feed store in Axel’s hometown), but in the course of a battle with Daywalkers, Axel is severely wounded when a shotgun blows up in his face. (Despite this, Axel continues to assert that “guns are the only thing you can count on in this world“.) He acquires an infection (something one would think might happen more often during a vampire apocalypse), and the antibiotics Scarlett is able to locate don’t help. To save his life, she captures a Daywalker and forces the creature to bite Axel. Since Vanessa once cured Axel’s vampirism with a bite, he can’t be turned again. The Daywalker virus counteracts the infection and Axel recovers.
Scarlett is assisted in caring for Axel by Simon (Jeff Kober), who got religion before The Rising when he escaped what appeared to him to be certain death by hiding from an unexpected tornado in a phone booth. (His description of the event is strange in that he found a phone booth in a parking lot but there were no buildings in the vicinity. Parking lots and buildings tend to go together. But he may have been on drugs at the time, so his memory could be clouded.)
Vampires seem to avoid Simon, and he likes to make people think he is protected by God, but his survival might be due to something as simple as his diet. We have not seen any swimming vampires, and they might avoid the smell of salt water and/or the smell of fish. Simon’s illusory walking on water trick may have put Scarlett in a dangerous frame of mind as she and Axel follow Vanessa back to Renfield House. It should also be noted that Vanessa, even though she spent a day or so hanging from a slaughterhouse hook, has at least a twenty-two day head start on them, but Vanessa is on foot, and Axel has a truck.
We have not seen Sarah (Rukiya Bernard) for three episodes.
The first episode of DEADLY CLASS, “Noise, Noise, Noise”, with Siobhan Williams as Brandy Lynn is now available to watch commercial-free on on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter until 1 January, and on SYFY.com, and the SYFY and USA apps until the show’s official premiere date of 16 January. (Williams was Lillian Van Helsing’s maidservant in “I Awake“.) DEADLY CLASS is based on the graphic novel by Rick Remender and Wes Craig about a school for teenage assassins.
VAN HELSING has been renewed by SyFy for a 13-episode fourth season, and Jonathan Lloyd Walker will take over from Neil LaBute as showrunner. Walker has written eight VAN HELSING episodes, including this one and the Season Three finale. He told Deadline: “Season 4 will delve deeper into the iconic lore of the vampires and their ultimate goals for this world. New villains will rise along with unexpected heroes joining the fight. We have a fantastic build planned for this season and I’m thrilled to share it with our dedicated fans.” Production is expected to begin early next year.
Walker also wrote “Queen of Hearts”, the third episode of THE MURDERS, an eight-episode police drama that will star Jessica Lucas as rookie Homicide Detective Kate Jameson, who searches for redemption after her negligence is the cause of a fellow officer’s death. In the pilot episode, Detective Jameson is partnered with Detective Mike Huntley (Lochlyn Munro) as they search for an elusive serial killer who uses music for destructive ends. The regular cast includes Dylan Bruce (ORPHAN BLACK), Terry Chen (THE EXPANSE), and Luvia Petersen (CONTINUUM). Elise Gatien (Maggie on GHOST WARS) will guest star in Episode 3. THE MURDERS began filming in Vancouver in October, and will air on CITY-TV in 2019.
