#5 — LIGHTS – Caitlin Cronenberg
This portrait of author/musician Lights was the most spectacular thing Cronenberg posted to Instagram this year. The picture was posted in June, and in July, Lights released the book SKIN&EARTH (with an accompanying 14 track album), the story of Enaia Jin, a girl “caught between romance and cults, gods and mortals, and just trying to find a good borscht”. Jin is led down a dark path that reveals a strange fantasy world and her own true nature.
Lights says that the album and the book are “…better absorbed separately and each of them augments the other. So you can listen to a song on its own and it’s something completely standalone. And then you can read the comic on its own and it’s standalone as well. But when you put them together and you start to connect the dots, there’s something so much deeper there.”
In September, Cronenberg and Jessica Ennis released THE ENDINGS: PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES OF LOVE, LOSS, AND BEGINNING AGAIN, a collection of photographic vignettes about women in times of emotional transformation. Cronenberg told Quill and Quire that the book’s photos have a cinematic quality. “It’s like you’re acting out a scene,” she said, “except you’re shooting stills instead of recording it. The photographs are not posed and sometimes they’re not in focus. It’s a very specific aesthetic.”
#4 — COUCHING – April Mullen
Mullen posted this on Instagram from Salton Sea Beach, California in June with the caption: “Time; how you move unpredictably…take this Waltz, take this Waltz #saltonsea #aprilmullen #couching” (She might have been location scouting for the episode of LETHAL WEAPON that she would direct later in the year.)
The LETHAL WEAPON episode mentioned earlier “What the Puck” (Episode 3.8, in which Murtaugh makes an unlikely friend) can be streamed on HULU.
#3 — TWO AMIGOS – Hilary Jardine
This was taken during a light Peruvian snowfall on Jardine’s recent visit to South America. “Not me in the pic,” she said. “Just caught these two in a moment.” She attached multilingual hashtags — #amigos #amie #friends #mates #ven #vriende #pals #buds #amico #cara #ffrind #van #vinur #draugs #prieteni #freunde #filos #love #travel. The two amigos are standing on Rainbow Mountain, which is 5,200 meters high and is multi-coloured (except when covered in snow).
In VALLEY OF THE BOOM (a six part miniseries that follows the birth of Silicon Valley through the dot-com crash), Jardine is Patty Beron, founder of the online community sfgirl.com, The series will launch on the National Geographic Channel on 13 January. (The first two episodes can be streamed for free in advance of the premiere.)
#2 — KISSING STREETCARS – Amanda Tapping
Amanda Tapping tweeted this photo on 4 February, saying “Location scouting earlier in the week for @AnneTheSeries I liked the two kissing streetcars. They seemed happy in their old age. #lifegoals” At the time, Tapping was preparing to direct her second episode of ANNE WITH AN E, “Struggling With the Perception of Facts” (Season 2 Episode 8, in which Anne wonders what sort of bride she’d like to be). She also directed the first season episode “Wherever You Are Is My Home” ANNE WITH AN E can be streamed on the CBC website in Canada and on Netflix in the US.
Tapping is currently directing an episode of THE 100 (no details on that are yet available). She directed four episodes of TRAVELERS Season Three (also avaiable on Netflix) in 2018. She also directed Episode 14.10 of SUPERNATURAL, titled “Nihilism”, which will air on the CW on Thursday, 17 January at 8/7c.
As an actor, Tapping has appeared in ten episodes of SUPERNATURAL as the angel Naomi. She has appeared in five episodes of TRAVELERS as psychiatrist Dr. Katrina Perrow.
#1 — untitled – Jane Ui
This complex, casual, over-the-shoulder twist on a selfie is a last-minute addition to this list. (It was published on 30 December.) I’ve never seen anything quite like this one. It was not captioned, and like many of her photographs, it forces one to imagine the story it could be a part of. All five pictures on this list suggest a story, and this is the best of them.
Jane Ui is a Chinese fashion model and photographer. Almost no biographical information is available. She posts regularly on Instagram, and has an account on Weibo on which she also posts photos (but hasn’t since 27 October).
