WYNONNA EARP – Season 3 Episode 3 – SPOILERS
Nicole (Kat Barrell) explains to Waverly that, when she was “just a kid”, her aunt and uncle allowed her to attend a concert in the Ghost River Triangle. While she was there, the crowd was attacked by the same demon that died (?) in that fireball with Dolls, and Nicole was the only survivor. Waverly calls the demon “Bondage Bob”, probably because he wore leather. Young Nicole made her way down to the river and was rescued by someone, but she does not remember who. Since Nicole grew up somewhere in the vicinity of the Triangle, are her relatives still living in the area?
Being a vampire, Kate (Chantel Riley), can’t go anywhere without an invitation. Unable to just pop in and visit people, she steals Waverly’s purse which contains a message Dolls left for Wynonna. When Doc and Waverly confront Kate at the Gardner house, she is reading the Tarot. Kate looks closely at Waverly and turns over the Temperance card.
KATE: “Temperance. The Angel card. Balance and moderation. But it’s upside down. Lack of long term vision.”
WAVERLY: “Give me the envelope back, or next time, I bring a stake.” [Kate returns the purse] “I Thank you very much. Did you open it?”
KATE: “Of course not. I’m a vampire, not an asshole. I just wanted an invitation.”
WAVERLY: “Well, then like a few selfies and slide into my DM’s like a normal person.”
Then, after Waverly leaves:
KATE: “I get it now. The little one, so fiery. Just like Wyatt.”
DOC: “Waverly is not even an Earp.”
KATE: [Looking at the Temperance card] “She’s something, all right.”
Kate tells Doc that the Tarot cards “spoke to her about the death of a great warrior”, and that she knows where Dolls has gone. Doc says he already knows, so she doesn’t tell him. Now that he is no longer immortal, Doc seems inordinately preoccupied with after-death possibilities. Last episode, he was quite upset that, after Dolls shot and killed him during the glamour spell cast by the Iron Witch (in “Gone As A Girl Can Get”) he had gone to “the same place Wynonna sends her revenants”. (Doc did not actually die in that episode, nor did he go to hell.) It is interesting that both Doc and Dolls remembered what they thought happened to them during the witch’s spell (see previous post).
Kate also tells Doc that Wyatt Earp worked as a stunt rider in Hollywood. There is no evidence to support this, but Earp did make an (uncredited) appearance in the 1916 film THE HALF BREED, directed by Alan Dwan, written by Anita Loos, and starring Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. The movie is part of the DVD The Actors: Rare Films Of Douglas Fairbanks Sr. Vol.2“.
In this episode’s final scene, Doc and Kate seem to be back together. (The last shot focuses in on the Tarot card The Lovers.) Kate indicates that she became a vampire after learning of Doc’s curse, in order to live long enough to see him again. At present, she’s living at the Gardner house. If and when Mercedes (Dani Kind) returns, will Kate move in with Doc? Also, how Kate will feed is an interesting question.
With Dolls dead, and Doc back together with Kate, Wynonna is at least temporarily without romantic entanglement.
Dolls’ friend Quinn (Peter Mooney), who came to town for the funeral, wants revenge on Black Badge and tries to take it out on Jeremy. Wynonna interrupts him as he is torturing Jeremy with a staple gun (which brings to mind Allison Hendrix, a glue gun, and ORPHAN BLACK). Wynonna persuades Quinn to release Jeremy, and in the process she names those she has lost. Included in the list are Levi and Fish, two revenants she dispatched with peacemaker in “Keep the Home Fires Burning“. It is unusual for Wynonna to list revenants among her fallen comrades. Perhaps she has come to realize that Wyatt may occasionally have shot the wrong person.
Dolls is cremated and his ashes buried in a small coffin along with his badge and a jug of whiskey from Shorty’s. (It must have been difficult to dig that grave in the solidly frozen ground.) Interestingly, Wynonna hangs her necklace (the one that Dolls returned to her the first time they met) on Dolls’ tombstone. She does not bury the necklace. Does that mean she intends to retrieve it later? Surely if she leaves it there, someone else will make off with it. We still don’t know what that key opens.
Chantel Riley (Kate) is Trudy Clarke in FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES, a series set in Toronto during the 1920s. The show follows the city’s only female private detective (Lauren Lee Smith) and her partner Trudy as they take on the cases the police don’t want or can’t handle. (Melanie Scrofano guest starred as Jenny Shaw in the seventh episode, titled “Ties That Bind”.) The eleven episode first season will premiere on the PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel and PBS Passport (a PBS starion member benefit) on 20 August. A new episode will be available each Monday.
In Canada, the entire first season can be streamed on the CBC website. Season Two began production in May.
Gord Rand (Lou in “She Wouldn’t Be Gone“) will star as Jim, a young doctor running in a 24 hour ultra marathon, in MAN RUNNING, a drama set in the mountains of southern Alberta. Jim is struggling with, not only the physical endurance test, but also with his decision to assist in the death of Robyn (Milli Wilkinson), a terminally ill teenager under his care. Sasha Barry (Bethany in “Two-Faced Jack“) and Ryan Northcott (Wyatt Earp in “The Blade“) also appear in the film. “We play scenes multiple times and they have different endings because he’s running them through his head,” director Gary Burns told Eric Volmers of the Calgary Herald. “You’re not sure what is real and what is not. There’s some playing with what’s the truth and what’s not.” MAN RUNNING should debut at film festivals this fall.
Varun Saranga is Vijay Gill in CARTER, a ten episode series about an actor (Harley Carter, played by Jerry O’Connell) who once played a detective on TV, and returns to his Canadian hometown after a public meltdown threatens his career. Aided by his police detective friend (Sydney Tamiia Poitier), he uses his on-screen experience to help him solve real crimes. Vijay is Harley’s agent. CARTER is currently airing Tuesdays at 9pm on CTV in Canada, and will premiere on WGN America in the US on 7 August at 10/9c.
