SIREN – Season 1 Episode 7 – SPOILERS
Deputy Staub (Tammy Gillis) brings Ryn into the sheriff’s office in cuffs with the help of two burly state troopers. The sheriff is initially confused by what Ryn tells him, but Maddie, with the help of her dad’s conveniently placed saltwater fish tank, clears things up for him. (She pours salt water from the tank on Ryn’s hand and it transforms into a claw.) This means that a partially submerged mermaid transforms only partially. If the navy finds out about this, they will have a whole new way to torture merfolk.
Meanwhile, Ben joins Xander (Ian Verdun) on his boat ostensibly to aid in his quest for Donna, but really in an effort to prevent the merfolk from coming to harm. He need not have worried. Xander and his crew locate the navy trawler, but they find no one on board. (There is plenty of blood on the boat, suggesting that the crew may have been killed.) A spear-throwing merman boards Xander’s boat. Another puts a hole in the hull below the waterline. The navy trawler was not sunk by the mermen, so their spears (which probably are tooth-sharpened and made from whalebone) must not have been able to penetrate the hull of that vessel.
Xander’s dad (Brian Anthony Wilson) had a really bad day. His wife kicked him out so he decided to sleep on his boat. While he was sleeping, his son took the boat out chasing mermaids without telling him, and he ended up being the only one on board who got killed. Ben, Xander, and Chris decide to bury Xander’s dad at sea, to avoid awkward questions. If that body surfaces, the questions will be even more awkward.
Deputy Staub was clearly not happy to find out that Ryn was released. It seems likely that she’ll keep poking around, and eventually stir up trouble. Admiral Harrison (Anthony Harrison) is not likely to abandon pursuit of the merfolk, having lost the crew of his trawler. Donna likely still wants her sister to return to the sea, and will probably return and encourage Ryn to do that. Decker is still in town, and still under the influence of the siren song.
We have not yet seen Xander’s mom or Maddy’s mom. Mother’s day is next week. Maybe we will.
The merman who, along with Donna, jumped into Xander’s boat is (according to IMDB) named Levi. Ryn named herself after an animated sea horse. Donna took the name of a dead military nurse. I’m guessing he’ll name himself after a pair of jeans? (If he ventures onto land, he probably won’t “porky pig it” like the mermaids. He’ll steal pants to wear, not a shirt.
Donna and Chris have a moment on the North Star before the mermaid leaps back into the sea. Will Chris become as obsessed with mermaids and their song as Decker has? Do mermen sing as well? Or is it just the females that do that?
Hannah Levien (Janine) is Claire in Episode 3.2 of COLONY, titled “Puzzle Man”, in which Will (Josh Holloway) and Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies) put themselves at risk to make contact with the Resistance, and Broussard (Tory Kittles) pieces together Global Authority secrets left behind in LA. (The show’s premise is that, in the near-future, Los Angeles is occupied by an invading force called the Transitional Authority, which rules in the name of an extraterrestrial group called “Hosts“, about whom little is known. The Authority enforces Host policy via militarized police called Homeland Security.) “Puzzle Man” will air on the USA Network Wednesday 9 May at 10/9c.
Sedale Threatt Jr. (Levi) will play the title character in the biopic IT’S TIME, the story of Chucky Mullins, a defensive back for the University of Mississippi who, in 1989, was paralyzed after tackling Vanderbilt player Brad Gaines, and died two years later. Gaines still visits Mullins’ grave twice a year. The film’s title comes from the Ole Miss Rebels’ chant: “It’s fate. It’s football. It’s love. It’s time.” A theatrical release is planned for later this year.
Gil Birmingham (Sheriff Bishop) is Thomas Rainwater in YELLOWSTONE, a series about the fictional Dutton family, owners of the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. The family is involved with unscrupulous developers, fracking, big oil, big lumber, and corrupt politicians. Kevin Costner will star as patriarch John Dutton.
Rainwater is a newly installed Native American chief who is “hungry for a fight”, and wants to buy the Dutton ranch and “pull down every fence” so the area will again look like it did before colonization. YELLOWSTONE is the first scripted series for the Paramount Network (which used to be called Spike), and is one of the most expensive series in TV history. The ten-episode series was filmed in Utah and Montana. A trailer is available on YouTube. The series will premiere on 20 June.
