VAN HELSING – Season 2 Episode 7 – SPOILERS
We get a second oddly calendar-specific flashback about Dimitri‘s past. Earlier this season, we learned that Dimitri turned Julius into a vampire in 1936. Here we find out that Dimitri was captured by a diminutive Van Helsing and some military cohorts in 1976. This is almost certainly prior to Vanessa’s birth, so it is possible that genetic material extracted from Dimitri during his capture was used in designing the embryos that became Vanessa and Scarlett. The 70s Van Helsing is seen preparing to extract spinal fluid (?) from a helpless Dimitri. Then, for some unknown reason, someone allowed him to escape from The Farm shortly after that. We don’t know who, and neither does Dimitri.
Vampires are awfully overconfident and it sometimes gets them into trouble. The vamp queen Maya (Ona Grauer) is killed by Dimitri’s emissary (Roland Pidlubny) because she let him get too close to her with a cross. (Crosses don’t have any mystical power over vampires on this show, but he stabs her in the neck with the thing.) Dimitri at one point has a hold on Vanessa’s sister and has the mysterious key in his hand, but his lack of caution allows her to slice off his hand, retrieve the key, and escape.
Dimitri picked his hand off the floor and calmly reattached it. His severed hand was VAN HELSING’s first. LOST GIRL, KILLJOYS, and WYNONNA EARP have chopped off four hands each. Recently on GHOST WARS (which follows VAN HELSING on SyFy), a kitten morphed into a severed hand, indirectly killing someone.
Vanessa finally bites Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) and turns him human again, but he appears to die afterward. The gang puts him in a body bag and buries him, but the burial, as it turns out, is premature. After a while, Vanessa starts hearing a very loud (tell-tale?) heartbeat and instructs Julius to turn Wanda (the fortified ambulance from the hospital in Seattle) around. She digs Axel up and he is, indeed, still alive. The really important thing that happens in this sequence is that Scarlett also (after a bit of a delay) hears Axel’s subterranean heartbeat, possibly indicating the awakening of her powers, whatever they may be.
What likely awakened Scarlett’s powers was getting bit by Vanessa, who, when trapped, used her sister’s blood like Popeye uses spinach to go berserker on Dimitri and his goons.
Lucky, Flesh, and Mohamed go looking for Wanda but can’t find the ambulance because Vanessa and friends have already taken it. Mohamed is kidnapped by Sam. Lucky and Flesh, possibly inadvisedly, go looking for him.
Vanessa and everyone she’s turned human again have a communal dream about a mountain with the red sky, and the vampire elder that is buried there. Vanessa says she knows where that is. (Could it be in Colorado?) Then the US military arrives in a Black Hawk helicopter in the middle of the night (Axel recognizes the sound of it), gasses the gang, and takes Vanessa.
Christopher Hyerdahl (Sam) is Don Berryman in DAMNATION, the story of Seth Davenport (Killian Scott), who appears to be a small town Iowa preacher, but really is a self-styled agent provocateur trying to spark an insurrection against oppressive big money interests. Unknown to Davenport, an industrialist tycoon has hired a professional strikebreaker to stop that insurrection by any means necessary. The show’s creator, Tony Tost, told Kate McCrea of TV Series Hub: “I’ve got a pretty decent blue collar chip on my shoulder. I’ve always felt that the deck was stacked against someone with my class background. And I think blue collar life — whether white, black, latino, mixed or otherwise — is radically under-represented on American TV. One of my goals in Damnation is to bring a blue collar sensibility to the show: not just in terms of content, but in terms of the style and tone of the show.” Filmed in and around Calgary, Alberta, DAMNATION airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on USA Network. Past episodes can be purchased on YouTube.
Laura Mennell (Rebecca) will be Mimi Hynek, wife of J. Alan Hynek, in the ten episode History Channel series BLUE BOOK which will chronicle the true, top secret, U.S. Air Force-sponsored investigation into UFO-related phenomena in the 50s and 60s that was known as Project Blue Book. (After years of debunking UFO reports, Mr. Hynek would eventually conclude, much to the dismay of the US Air Force, that some unexplained sightings were genuine.) LOST GIRL’s Ksenia Solo will also be in the cast. She will play Susie, who is described as “a stylish, eye-catching young woman with an alluring confidence to envy”. Susie befriends Mimi, but while the two women bond over similar interests, it will soon become apparent that Susie is far more complex than she initially appears to be. BLUE BOOK will begin production in Vancouver in December.
Mennell will also play New York gossip columnist Hedda Parsons (a blend of Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons?) in the third season of THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, the Amazon series based on Philip K Dick’s 1962 science fiction novel about what the world might be like had the Nazis won World War II. Season three began filming in the last week of June and will be released in early 2018. THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE is available only on Amazon Prime Video.
The song playing while Vanessa and the gang are being gassed at the end of the episode is Paralyzer by the Montreal rock band SUUNS. It is Track 9 on their 2016 album Hold/Still, which is available on iTunes, and on Amazon. Suuns will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxvill, Tennessee on Sunday 25 March.
