Kate Corbett (Stacey in three episodes of LG Season 5) is Lady in the thriller ONCE THERE WAS A WINTER, a film about a young biology student (Corbett) who finds herself trapped in a double-wide trailer with a hunter, a welder, a plumber, and a cabinet full of guns, and learns the hard way about surviving in the Canadian north. Writer/director Ana Valine told Dana Gee of the Vancouver Sun that while writing the script, she drew on her own memories of landing in the midst of a very male world and needing to change the way she presented herself. “In my late 20s I worked up on the pipeline in northern Alberta,”, Valine said. “I had heard of a few situations and had some tense nights myself. It sat with me for years and years, and I basically let my imagination go with it and I wrote it in three weekends…I was the only female on the crew up there. You are in a very masculine world. It’s no place to sort of assert feminism and still be safe. So you have to kind of roll with a lot of it.” A trailer is available. Filmed fifteen miles outside of Dawson Creek, ONCE THERE WAS A WINTER will next screen at the Vancouver International Film Festival on 6 October at at 4:30pm.
Linda Hamilton (Acacia in one episode of each of the last 3 seasons of LOST GIRL) will be Florence in CURVATURE, a time travel science fiction drama about Helen (Lindsy Fonseca), an engineer who wakes up one morning, disheveled and panicked, with partial memory loss. The phone rings and a voice that sounds a lot like her own warns her that she is in danger. Soon, Helen is on the run from unknown pursuers while she follows a trail of clues she seems to have left for herself. It quickly becomes clear to her that she has traveled thirty-six hours back in time, in an apparent effort both to uncover the truth about her husband’s death, and to stop the past version of herself from committing a terrible crime. CURVATURE will next be screened at the Sitges Film Festival (about 40 kilometers southeast of Barcelona, Spain) on 9 October at 6:15pm.
Rachel Skarsten (Tamsin in 34 LG episodes) is Claire in ACQUAINTED, a film that focuses on romantic conflicts that pit practical considerations against the threat of monotony. Giacomo Gianniotti and Laysla De Oliveira star as former high school classmates who run into each other at a bar and are immediately attracted to one another. Then they both reluctantly confess that they’re already in committed relationships. The situation forces the two to choose between comfort and unpredictability. Adelaide Kane, who plays Cheri in the movie, told Just Jared Jr. that the film “…follows two couples in their mid-to-late 20s who are both in long term relationships. It explores love and what love means in that demographic.” No release date has been announced.
Skarsten will also be Madeline Krug, a bridal boutique owner who loves her job, in the romantic comedy MARRY ME AT CHRISTMAS. Krug is unexpectedly swept off her feet by a bride’s film star brother, Jonny Blaze (Trevor Donovan). Planning the perfect wedding for Blaze’s sister leads to candlelit dinners and strolls through snow-covered streets with Blaze. MARRY ME AT CHRISTMAS will air on The Hallmark Channel on 28 October at 8pm.
Michelle Nolden (Freyja in two episodes of LG Season 5) is Dr. Laura Stevens, a peak-performance trainer, in the sport thriller RUN TO ME (aka RUNNING FOR HER LIFE), a film about an amateur triathlete (Claire Forlani) who convinces Dr. Stevens to take her on as a client. Using experimental hypnotherapy, Stevens pushes Allison to her limits and forces her to explore repressed memories of her mother’s suicide. The program works, but at great cost to Allison’s personal life, especially her relationship with her daughter. A trailer is available on YouTube. RUN TO ME was filmed in Montreal in 2015, and can currently be streamed on Netflix.
