THE EXPANSE – Season 2 Episode 4 – SPOILERS
So they stole the Mormon ship and launched it directly at Eros with the idea of knocking that asteroid off its course and into the sun, only Eros ducked and the Nauvoo went flying off toward the outer solar system. Somehow, the protomolecule moved the asteroid out of harm’s way. How did the alien organism manage that? Might this enigma change the mindset of Miller and Holden and Johnson, and stop them from their pursuit of the protomolecule’s destruction? Or will it make them even more afraid?
A Star Fleet captain in this situation would have likely invoked the Prime Directive pending an investigation into whether the protomolecule might be sentient.
Before the asteroid’s magical orbital alteration, the Rocinante discovered that Eros had another visitor. A medical ship attempting to help whatever survivors there might be was discovered on the surface. When Holden found out they had been inside and were possibly contaminated, he blew up their ship before they could communicate what they had seen (or what they might have contracted). If they were determined to communicate their observations, why didn’t they do that immediately upon being discovered? It seems necessary to point out that Holden got into this situation because somebody blew up his ship, The Canturbury, for similar reasons (to keep it from telling anyone what Holden and his boarding party found out while answering a distress call). Does it really make a difference that Holden gave the medical ship a chance to surrender? Would The Canturbury have heeded a similar warning from the stealth ship that destroyed her?
Naomi’s reaction to Holden’s newfound ruthlessness leaves room for hope. When he blew up that medical ship, one could see in her eyes the realization that Holden is a bit mad. She has most likely begun to work out the details of a mutiny, should one become necessary.
In this episode, people continually reassure themselves and each other that they are doing the “right thing”. This is often an indication that they know very well that they are not.
One assumes that someone will have to go after the Nauvoo.
Diogo, tells Miller that space is “better than sex”. Miller disagrees and repeatedly suggests that Diogo should get laid. There may be a few people in the viewing audience that would like Miller to go back to Ceres and spend some time with Octavia Muss (Athena Karkanis) again.
Miller sums up what many might be feeling after watching this episode in one short sentence: “The stars are better off without us.”
