On her 27th birthday, Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano) learns that she has inherited her great-great-grandfather Wyatt’s ‘mythic abilities’ (as well as his Buntline Special), and that she is also heir to a family curse. She reluctantly returns to her home town of Purgatory, Alberta where, because of the curse, the resurrected souls of criminals once killed by Wyatt Earp are attempting to take over the town.
Along with her sister Waverely (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), FBI Agent Dolls (Shamier Anderson) and the somehow immortal Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), she must try to stop these revenants from achieving their goals and escaping into the outside world. Katherine Barrell (who was Maisie in the LOST GIRL episode Table for Fae) will be Deputy Sheriff Nicole Haught in ten of the thirteen episodes.
As to how Scrofano got the lead role in the series, according to the Calgary Herald, Andras said Scrofano’s tape immediately jumped out, particularly since the young actress nonchalantly chewed gum throughout the entire audition.
“Which is like a mega no-no!” says Andras. (To be fair, Scrofano says she doesn’t remember the gum-chewing). “She just had this spirit of Not. Giving. A. Damn. She captured the spirit of that sexy craziness. I didn’t know what she was going to do next in the audition. She captured the charm but also the vulnerability of this girl with this massive burden of having to be a hero.”
Alex Paxton-Beesley is not yet listed as a cast member, but Sally Bishop is listed as a stunt double for her. Paxton-Beesley was Lola the Kitsune in the LOST GIRL episode The Kenzi Scale.
Greg Bryk of BITTEN may also appear on W.E. He tweeted on 14 December: “It will be fun to head to Calgary today to begin the end of the acting year @wynonnaearp.”
WYNONNA EARP’s first episode is directed by Paolo Barzman, who directed twelve episodes of LOST GIRL, including the series finale. Episodes 6 and 7 are directed by Brett Sullivan, who directed LG 2.17, The Girl Who Fae’d With Fire. Episodes 2, 3, 8 and 9 are directed by Ron Murphy, who directed nine LOST GIRL episodes including Groundhog Fae.
Episodes 1, 2 and 13 are authored by Showrunner Emily Andras. Of the show’s other writers, Alexandra Zarowny, Shelly Scarrow and Brendan Yorke also wrote for LOST GIRL. WYNONNA EARP is based on the limited series comic created by Beau Smith and currently published by IDW Publishing.
Here are some facts about Wyatt Earp. He worked as a lawman mostly in Kansas and Arizona (Calgary is 2600 kilometers almost due north of Tombstone, AZ and the OK Corral). There is no evidence that he ever actually possessed one of the Buntline Specials, or if he did, that he ever used it. Records were poorly kept in those days, but a revolver with a 12 inch barrel would be very conspicuous, difficult to handle, and might only be good for killing the walking dead. Wyatt had four spouses, three of them common-law, but records show that he had no children with any of them, so his relationship with Wynonna’s great-great grandmother must have been a more casual one.
In Canada, episode one will air 4 April on CHCH TV, and CHCH will stream the first episode online simultaneously with SyFy’s April 1st premiere.
