LOST GIRL – Season 5 Episode 16 – SPOILERS
The LOST GIRL finale was very nearly perfect. Michael Grassi has written seven LOST GIRL episodes, and this one is easily the best of them. It accomplishes everything it needs to, and everyone’s story had a positive outcome.
Bruce (Rob Archer) showed up to save the gang from their burning house. He didn’t get to do much, but it was nice to see him again.
Tamsin painfully gave birth to a girl during Bo’s battle with Hades. Valkyries always die in childbirth, but, because it is her last life, Tamsin rises (ascends?) instead, leaving behind a single wing feather that comes to rest on the Blanket of Skeemotah (which Trick left her, and is wrapped around the baby). It’s a good bet that feather has magical properties.
Lauren and Bo sat on the hood of the Camaro and awkwardly committed themselves to a long term relationship. Earlier in the episode, Dyson reassured Lauren that, after she dies, he would be there to “take care of” Bo. Why do both Dyson and Lauren still believe that Bo needs to be protected?
Vex (Paul Amos) and Mark decide to be a couple, or at least one would like to believe that they do. Vex asks Mark if he has chosen between light and dark. Mark replies that he probably never will, but that he has definitely made one choice, and meaningfully takes Vex’s hand. The scene is sufficiently ambiguous that it probably won’t be cut when the episode is eventually shown on SyFy.
The best thing is the flash forward at the end. Years into the future we see Tamsin’s daughter Dagny (Olivia Scriven), who has grown into a teenager, making out with her girlfriend in the back seat of a car. (Bo’s first such experience resulted in the death of her high school boyfriend.) It is not clear just how dangerous an inexperienced Valkyrie could be in that situation. It might be possible for her to doubt her girlfriend to death (?), or poke an eye out with her wing. However, in a post-episode interview with Emily Gagne, Michael Grassi explained that “The makeout scene in the car was a mirror of Bo and Kyle’s car scene. Kyle was Bo’s first kill. And now Dagny, coming into her powers, might accidentally kill her girlfriend the same way Bo accidentally killed Kyle.”. This almost certainly means that Hades took on some of Bo’s genetic characteristics when he impersonated her in order to impregnate Tamsin. That would make Dagny part succubus. Either that, or Hades is an incubus. Whatever the danger, it was avoided when Mark (who in the future is a cop) shone his flashlight on them.
Mark (Luke Bilyk) brings Dagny to the Dal. Kenzi has prepared her for this day, so she immediately recognizes the wolf, the mesmer, and the doctor. She asks about Bo, who enters a few minutes later (Kenzi has kept Dagny hidden among humans, probably with some branch of the Malikov family. Vex and Mark seem to have been quietly keeping tabs on the girl while she was growing up.
Dyson tells Dagny that she need not choose between dark and light, because the light/dark divide is no longer in effect in the colony, though this is not the case in the rest of the Fae world. He also refuses to serve her beer because she is underage. (The drinking age in Toronto is 19.)
DAGNY: [indicating the handprint on her chest] “What’s this?”
BO: “Evil. I don’t know how and I don’t know when, but it’s coming for you.”
DAGNY: “What happens then?”
BO: “We’ll be ready.”
Doesn’t that sound like the prelude to a new series?
Ali Liebert (Crystal the Waitress at the beginning of LOST GIRL Season 4) will be Alina, a Belgian farm girl who falls in love with an American Army captain during the Battle of the Bulge in the made-for-TV movie CHRISTMAS TRUCE. The couple vows to reunite (should both of them survive) on the first Christmas after the end of the war. The film will have its US permiere 12 December on ION Television.
Liebert will also be Dawn in the science fiction short film COLLIDER. Dawn is a theoretical physicist who has discovered the means to penetrate the membranes that separate parallel universes, and uses this knowledge to search for a universe in which Ann, the love of her life who has been killed in a car accident, is still alive. The project is seeking a production grant from STORYHIVE, a program which bases its grants on votes from the community. (If you join STORYHIVE, you can vote for this project once a day until 8 November.) Two people who worked on CONTINUUM, Jamie Alain and Adam Stern, are also involved with COLLIDER.
Shakura S’Aida (Dark Fae Elder #2) will appear as Lena in four episodes of SCHITT’S CREEK in 2016. (S’Aida is also an award-winning jazz and blues singer, whose next appearance will be at the Jazz Bistro in Toronto on 18 November.) She first appeared on LOST GIRL as a Fae Elder in Blood Lines, the final episode of Season 1.
Rob Archer (Bruce) will be Rocky in OPERATION INSANITY. Currently filming in Toronto, the action-adventure comedy follows a 17 year old boy who teams up with his grandfather (and granddad’s old war buddies) to save the girl he loves from a kidnapper.
